Mitsubishi Motors Increases Investments for New Electrified Lineup

We learned what Mitsubishi Motors is up to back in May 2020 when the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance shared their plans and mid-term strategy of Alliance 2022 . Basically, all eyes were on Mitsubishi to start the new lineup of vehicles from the Alliance. Three years later, we’re still waiting. The Alliance wants to open up a new electric vehicle (EV) facility to speed up development, and Renault and Nissan are already talking about investments, but Mitsubishi Motors is still holding off. Now, in March 2023, the automaker starts to speak up. Take a look at the medium-term strategy called “Challenge 2025”.
With a group shot of 16 upcoming models scheduled to launch over the next five years, we’re pretty sure that some of these models have to do with the Alliance 2030 business strategy announced in 2022. Ten upcoming EV models are already set to take the stage, with 15 plants currently manufacturing parts, motors, and batteries for those EV models. With 10 years of experience in EV Research and Development (R&D, the Alliance won’t just be releasing new models, but also sinking some money into R&D, and Mitsubishi’s new “Challenge 2025” strategy has a lot to do with more investments into R&D as well.
Among the 16 new cars, we can see some internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered vehicles, hybrid models, and fully electric models spanning across multiple segments. Covering the kei car, supermini, two-row SUV, three-row SUV, pickup, and minivan segments, Mitsubishi Motors is going to be all over it in the coming years. We know their subsidiary, Mitsubishi Electric, is constantly killing it in car tech, with some examples popping up at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show . New investments in the company’s R&D, and its collaboration with Renault and Nissan, will be the backbone of launching these 16 new models.
Of the 16 new cars, nine of them will be electrified to some extent, with four of those being all-electric models. Most of the vehicles in the image above are hiding under wraps, but there are some models trying to sneak out. Most notably, the ICE-powered pickup expected to arrive in 2023 will be the next generation, or the successor, of the Mitsubishi Triton/L200. Only available overseas, the Mitsubishi Triton is the only pickup truck by Mitsubishi, a midsize pickup truck by the way, and perfect for the auto market as it currently stands. The mid-size truck segment is seriously lacking. Only a certain 4×4 automaker has a model in the market, and competitors are talking about what they can do to capitalize on the current gap.
Amongst the new lineup, we can also see a new Mitsubishi Outlander (Pajero) Sport, a fully-electric pickup truck, a new three-row SUV to rival the Mitsubishi Outlander, a new passenger model, the rebadged Renault Clio for a new hybrid model., an all-electric minivan, a hybrid two-row SUV to replace the Eclipse Cross, and four more new battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). To make all this possible, the R&D will see a 30-increase in expenses overall, and going up to 70-percent for BEVs, starting in 2026.This is the future of Mitsubishi motors, and we’re finally getting somewhere after that announcement back in 2020 and 2022.
