Time and again, Kia Corp has become involve with the community and a variety of sports to reach out to their fans on a common playing field. Not just focused on purely business, Kia also knows its consumers have a life outside of the dealership lot, and the automaker continues to meet them halfway. Sponsoring the European League of Legends Championship , donating to charitable foundations like Covenant House, and the Great Unknown Scholarship are all examples of how Kia gets involved and gives back to its community. The newest campaign Kia has undertaken is at the start of the NBA season with their new ad – “Legends of the Driveway.”

In the ad spot, a Kia Telluride X-Pro rides through suburban neighborhoods, and even past a farm house, where just about every house featured has a basketball hoop installed somewhere in the driveway. So many of us have grown up with a basketball hoop at some point, whether able to dunk or make a single basket, and Kia America VP/Marketing Russell Wager knew fans would be able to relate to this. It’s all about developing bonds with family and friends in the driveway, and the new spot builds on that as well as commemorating the partnership between Kia and the NBA since 2008. This ad spot is the first time in the last six seasons that Kia returns with an ad spot with the NBA in mind, but the automaker has backed its partnership in many other ways, such as presenting partner of NBA Tip-Off since the 2008-09 season; serving as the official vehicle of the NBA Playoffs, NBA All-Star Game, NBA Finals and the NBA Draft; acting as presenting partner of TNT’s “Inside the NBA,” the Summer League, G League, and WNBA; and holds 13 NBA team partnerships with the 76ers, Bulls, Cavaliers, Clippers, Hawks, Heat, Hornets, Knicks, Magic, Pelicans, Pistons, Suns, and Warriors.

“[Kia] is synonymous with innovation, which is where the league is laser focused…evolution from performance and now including innovation, we are tasked with the very same things from our leadership teams…It’s really us making a priority on the league side to meet our fans where they are, and for Kia to reach our fans.” – NBA Head of Marketing Partnerships Tara Mulcahy

Sometimes it’s an ad spot, and other times it’s a huge spectacle. For any NBA fans out there, does anyone remember when Blake Griffin jumped over a Kia Optima in the 2011 Slam Dunk Contest? At first, the Optima was just going to be on the court during the contest, and like most fans, all eyes would be on Griffin, not the Optima. So, Kia reached out to the Griffin and the Clippers about putting the Kia Optima under the basket or at center court, and Griffin agreed to leap over the sedan, bringing the attention of fans not only to the player but also the Kia model he was jumping. That was a smart move for Kia America. With the start of the NBA season underway, expect to see a lot more of Kia over the next few months.
