Comparing the Kia Telluride X-Pro and Kia Carnival
Kia Corp is coming out with a lot of new vehicles as of late. Going all-electric, the automaker’s lineup is going to be electrified within the next few years, with at least two new battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) every year between now and 2027. During the Kia CEO Investor Day in March 2022 , the automaker shared its business strategy for the rest of the decade, with an addition of 14 BEV models planned. The Kia EV6 is the first of many, and although the automaker has dedicated itself to BEVs going forward, there the lineup still consists of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles like the Kia Telluride SUV and the luxury entry Kia Carnival MPV. With the release of the X-Pro trim for the Telluride, consumers are having trouble deciding between capability and luxury when it comes to choosing one of these two strong Kia entries.
Engine Types
Power on both models is pretty similar in terms of horsepower. The 2022 Kia Carnival has a 290 horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine under the hood, whereas the 2023 Kia Telluride comes equipped with a 3.8-liter V6 engine able to deliver 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. Only the Telluride offers all-wheel drive as an option, for that sense of adventure when driving on different terrain and road conditions, and a max towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.
Style and Features
The Kia Carnival is the luxury entry for Kia Corp. Doing well in the mass-market, the automaker wants to start getting traction in the luxury market, and this “multi-purpose vehicle” (MPV) has five trims making up the lineup, each more luxurious than the last. Consumers will enjoy the spacious interior and three available seating arrangements for situating up to eight passengers. Featuring full recline, raised power footrests, comfy headrests, and a customizable leather seat trim, the VIP lounge feel of the interior cabin is a nice touch. Two rows of heated and ventilated leather seats definitely add to the level of comfort.
The 2023 Kia Telluride X-Line and X-Pro trims are more about enhancing capability of the SUV versus how it looks, although there are some changes there as well. Starting with the X-Line, the Telluride comes with a higher ground clearance (+10mm), an upgraded approach and departure angles, a Tow mode for optimized trailering performance, and an upgraded Traction Control System (TCS). To separate the X-Line from other models, a unique radiator grille design, bridge-type roof rails, body-color door handles, exclusive 20-inch wheels, and “X-Line” badging, and X-Line” embossing can be found on the front seat upper backrest. X-Pro adds exclusive 18-inch black wheels and 18-inch all-terrain tires (Continental), its own “X-Pro” badging, “X-Pro” embroidery, and a 110-volt inverter outlet to the interior cabin.
Tech
This must really be a challenging point when it comes to choosing between comfort and capability. Tech is very similar, with the 2022 Kia Carnival featuring a two dual 12.3-inch displays stretch across the dashboard – a digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen – and the Telluride X series comes with an upgraded full 12.3-inch display available for a touchscreen as well. Of course, both come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Kia Connect is the new infotainment system. A Wi-Fi Hotspot is available on both, and both can upgrade from the standard six-speaker sound system to something much better – a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system in the Kia Carnival, and a 10-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system in the Telluride.
In terms of safety, the 2023 Kia Telluride offers many advanced safety features, but the Kia Carnival comes with more standard across the lineup, including lane following assist, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, driver attention warning with leading vehicle departure alert, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist-parallel exit, rear-cross traffic collision avoidance assist, safe exit assist, a rear view monitor, and rear occupant alert with ultrasonic sensors. Many of these are offered on the Telluride, but standard features include Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA), and Forward Collision Avoidance with Junction Turning (FCA-JT) Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control with Curve, Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2), and Forward Collision Avoidance with Junction Crossing, Lane Change Oncoming, Lane Change Side, and Evasive Steering Assist. Again, more geared towards life on the road and seeking adventure.
Regardless, Kia offers a great warranty plan for new Kia owners. Kia offers a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty program. The Kia 10-year/100,000 mile warranty program consists of 10-year/1000,000 mile limited powertrain warranty, 5-year/60,000 mile limited basic warranty, 5-year/100,000 mile limited anti-perforation warranty, and 5-year/60,000 mile roadside assistance plan.
