Back in May 2022, the Hyundai Motor Group ( HMG) announced a new all-electric vehicle and battery production plant to speed up the upcoming plans for electric vehicle (EV) expansion for Kia and Hyundai. Called the “Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America” (HMGMA), the plant is set for construction to start in 2023, with the plant fully operational by 2025. During the first half of 2025, the dedicated EV and battery plant facility will take over production of the Kia EV6 and other upcoming battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) announced but not yet produced, including the all-electric Kia SUV EV9 . Two years away, Kia Corp plans to release at least two EV models a year between now and 2027, so we can expect this new plant to be in charge of many new electric models in the HMG lineup.

“Kia was the first to open an auto assembly plant in Georgia, and our plan to produce EVs in the U.S. builds on the success and growth we have forged together and reinforces our commitment to becoming a sustainable mobility solutions provider…Together with our suppliers, Kia Georgia has helped create more than 14,000 jobs and we look forward to bringing new opportunities to the state we proudly call home.” – Sean Yoon, president and CEO of Kia North America and Kia America

After the COVID-19 pandemic first swept across the globe, many industries were affected, businesses went bankrupt, and the economy nearly flat-lined. Things were a mess, and the following semiconductor shortage definitely didn’t do anyone any favors. Two years later, and we’re all still recovering in our personal and professional lives, but things continue to get a little better at a time. In terms of the economy, Kia has already helped put food on the table and money in the hands of hard workers, and this new HMGMA is going to boost that number with more than 8100 jobs over the next few years.

Think of everything that goes into the production of an EV. It’s not just the construction of the vehicle model, most of which can be done by robotic equipment these days, but the resources used to put the EV together. That includes the new engineering mechanics for a powertrain that is fully electric, EV battery construction, and the many other EV components that have changed how automakers look at what’s under the hood. To establish a stable supply chain for EV batteries and parts in the U.S. market, that’s going to require more than just assembly workers – we need people out there collecting resources, negotiating costs and partnerships, and making it possible for the HMGMA to start production in 2025. Those are just some examples of the 8100 jobs about to open up.

Right now, Kia Georgia is in full-swing with the West Point factory, the home of the Kia Telluride, Sorento and Sportage SUVs, and the K5 midsize sedan. Over 90-percent of the vehicles assembled here are destined for dealerships across America. It all started back in 2006 when Kia establishing a state-of-the-art production facility in West Point, accounting for almost 40-percent of all Kia sales in the U.S. today. One of the biggest single foreign investments in the history of Georgia, Kia is on the move to become the next all-electric automaker, and the HMGMA will soon become ground-zero for the 14 BEV models Kia has planned to have in circulation by 2027.Want to keep updated on all things new for Kia Corp, Kia America, and HMG?
