2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Named SUV of the Year by Puros Autos
Mitsubishi Motors has been set on pumping up its lineup of SUVs over the last few years, especially when it comes to their sole plug-in hybrid entry into the North American market. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was well-received when it first hit the states, and although sales have dwindled, with many more sales for every other model in the lineup, the automaker still receives a lot of popularity from one demographic. Year-after-year, Mitsubishi can owe popularity for the Outlander and Outlander PHEV to Hispanic consumers, currently making a three-to-one ratio of the consumer base. The PHEV variant was even named SUV of the Year by Puros Autos during the publication’s “2023 Car of the Year with a Latin Flavor” awards.
“We are honored to receive the coveted 2023 Car of the Year with a Latin Flavor award for the SUV category from Puros Autos for the second year in a row…With room for the whole family across three rows of seats, electric motoring for up to 38 miles with the added convenience of a gasoline engine, and a bold style that sets it apart from anything else on the road, the Outlander PHEV is the flagship of Mitsubishi Motors.” – Mark Chaffin, Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) President and CEO
Last year (2022), Puros Autos held its annual awards competition, “Latin Flavor Cars of the Year” for 2021, and the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander was named “SUV of the Year”. After an electric marketing campaign dubbed “Thunderstruck ”, it would be easy to confuse the model in the spotlight for its plug-in hybrid variant. They look similar, and anything having to do with lightning and/or thunder would surely be about an electrified model. Well, this year, the Outlander PHEV is being pushed before the automaker sets its sights on a new all-electric model. The 2022 awards by Puros Autos marks the second year Mitsubishi has won the award from the publication, and with the focus on the PHEV model, it’s clear one demographic loves the original as much as the greener model.
According to Puros Autos , Hispanic consumers purchase one out of every four cars sold in the United States today. 25-percent isn’t bad, and one demographic is making it clear that Mitsubishi Motors isn’t out of the race yet. Even with the sales numbers of 2022, the Outlander PHEV is still the world’s best-selling plug-in hybrid SUV. It can owe much of its success to its bold styling, advanced vehicle architecture, award-winning interior, seven-passenger capacity, convenient technology and features, and legendary Mitsubishi SUV capability.
Upgraded for 2023, the Outlander PHEV came equipped with the automaker’s Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) all-wheel drive system designed to handle a variety of terrains and driving conditions. Moreover, the powertrain was also upgraded to the new generation of Mitsubishi Motors’ twin-motor 4WD PHEV system, adding one 114-horsepower motor in the front and one 134-horsepower motor at the rear, plus a 2.4-liter MIVEC four-cylinder Atkinson Cycle gasoline engine for the gasoline counterpart. Now able to provide an all-electric range of 38 miles, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is quickly catching up with competitors in the industry. According to Puros Autos Editor Enrique Kogan, if looking for thrills and an efficient SUV, the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV should be at the top of the list.
