Kia Motors Announces Two New Upcoming Electrified Vehicles

Kia Motors is always an automaker that we like hearing about. Always working on some new car technology or an interesting concept, Kia Motors is one brand that keeps moving forward. Most recently, the automaker confirmed that it will be launching two completely new electrified vehicles within the next few years, and both will definitely have a U.S. launch. That’s exciting, seeing as how vehicles manufactured overseas don’t always make it stateside. Moreover, one of the vehicles is a concept we’ve been keeping tabs on, and it seems that a driving range has finally been released, along with other details that demonstrate Kia Motors already working towards fulfilling their automaker’s “Plan S” Strategy.

The Plan S Strategy was launched earlier this year (2020), and highlighted multiple goals for Kia Motors over the next 5 years. A two-track plan, the focus is split between electric vehicles (EVs) and self-driving vehicle technology; and developing personal mobility solutions for consumers. The former begins with 11 new electric vehicles (EVs) by 2025, with the first dedicated EV to be launched in 2021. With the recent announcement from Kia Motors, we now know that two EVs are set for launch, with the first being a plug-in hybrid, possibly a crossover. The second is the Kia Futuron.

Need a refresher course? The Kia Futuron Concept is definitely taking the automaker in a new direction. The first dedicated EV, that means the first generation starts off as an EV, the Kia Futuron will become the first EV Kia Motors produces as an all-electric automaker . With a low-profile to keep the vehicle centered, a wide stance and long wheelbase make this EV capable of high-performance with enough power. The latest specs from the powertrain are still to be shared, but Kia Motors claims that this new EV will have a range of about 300 miles and can charge up in less than 20 minutes.

The design is also shaping up to be a hit. Equipped with new headlamps with a “Star Cloud” design, a geometric patchwork of matrix LED lighting, and sharp lines, this EV definitely doesn’t look like your standard battery-powered vehicle. Kia’s long range product strategy manager, Steve Kosowski, hinted at the new look for the EV model.

“[It’s] a crossover design that really blurs the line between passenger cars, CUVs, crossovers, it’s a little bit car, a little bit crossover, [and] in the end it will be a very stunning, dramatic new Kia EV, something that you’ve never seen before.” – Kosowski

It’s not 100-percent clear if the Kia Futuron will be one of the two EVs coming to the U.S., but with the automaker planning to release 11 EVs in the next five years, surely the Futuron will be one of them. Right now, with many automaker manufacturing facilities still paused, it’s anyone’s guess if the Plan S Strategy will be able to hold up, but Kia Motors sounds pretty confident. With a goal of selling 500,000 EVs worldwide and 1 million eco-friendly vehicles by 2026, an automaker needs to really knock it out of the park.
