Back in 2018, Kia Motors was quickly becoming the safest car brand in America , according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A little over a year ago, eight Kia Motors vehicles received a “Top Safety Pick” or “Top Safety Pick+” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, with a range of vehicles receiving their merits. Among them was the 2018 Kia Soul compact car, having received “Top Safety Pick+” rating. Now in 2019, the completely redesigned 2020 Kia Soul has also earned Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+) status.

Let’s have a quick refresh on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, or IIHS. The IIHS is a trusted organization for rating vehicle safety. Known for their intense impact crash-simulations that test a vehicle on a variety of circumstances, the IIHS is able to evaluate the safety of a vehicle based on crash avoidance and mitigation. The IIHS puts all new vehicles through the five following tests: small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints.

When it comes to testing, the ability of the vehicle to withstand the above collisions are rated as “Poor”, “Marginal”, “Acceptable”, and “Good”. Crash-prevention systems receive a “Basic”, “Advanced”, or “Superior” rating. For a vehicle to qualify for a 2019 TSP+ rating, it must earn a “Good” rating on each of the six crashworthiness tests. In terms of crash-prevention, it must also receive an “Advanced” or “Superior” rating, as well as a “Good” headlight rating.

Over recent years, Kia Motors has slowly increased the performance edge of its vehicles but has always been concerned with the safety of their vehicles as well. This is clearly apparent with their Kia Drive Wise package , with features showing up as standard equipment in more and more vehicles in the lineup. The 2020 Kia Soul received the TSP+ rating most specifically when models are equipped with optional Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist systems and LED headlights, but this is usually the case with many vehicles. Having earned “Good” ratings for all six crashworthiness tests, and a “Superior” rating for the optional front crash prevention systems, this brings the number of models to receive a TSP or TSP+ in 2019 to eleven with the 2020 Kia Soul.

“Sales have shown that the newly designed Soul is hitting all the right marks with car shoppers…The Soul’s unmatched style, driving refinement, and invigorating technology are key factors that have drawn consumers to Kia’s urban car, and this latest safety award is yet another reason the Soul should be considered a top contender in the compact car segment.” – Michael Cole, chief operating officer and EVP, Kia Motors America (KMA).

Remember, the 2020 Kia Soul is coming to the auto market with an all-new unmatched style, peppy performance, thrilling technology, and urban practicality. The new lineup consists of the LX, S, X-line, GT-Line, EX, GT Turbo, and there’s even the 2020 Kia Soul EV coming out. Remember, Kia Motors is starting three new lineups, with the 2020 Kia Soul featuring two of them, the new Kia GT and X-lineups .
