Kia Unveils EV5 Concept at 2023 Chinese EV Day
When the Kia EV9 all-electric SUV was first revealed by the automaker, consumers may have been wondering, “What about EV7, or EV8?” And for that matter, what about EV1-5? The Kia EV6 came out of seemingly nowhere. Well, we have an answer for the EV9. Kia stated that the EV9 is the ninth all-electric addition to its lineup, so why not just call it “Electric Vehicle Nine” or EV9? It sounds like an early concept code name. Well, we’re going to be seeing more of that in the prequel, because Kia just revealed the newest addition to the lineup – the Kia EV5 Concept.
“The Kia Concept EV5 takes influence from the contrast and complementarity of natural landscapes and man-made architecture. It is designed to inspire our customers on every journey, while providing sustainable and environmentally responsible solutions. Created for those who seek inventive new ideas, the SUV brings together emotional form language with innovative, user-focused interior architecture,” = Karim Habib, Executive Vice President, and Head of Kia Global Design Center
Well, it would seem that the Kia Corp is keen on sticking to its Plan S Strategy through 2030. According to their announcement during the Kia 2022 CEO Investor Day , the automaker wants to release at least two new battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) every year between 2023 and 2027. The EV9 was just officially revealed and now the EV5? Well, we’re already on our way!
Unveiled at Kia Chinese EV Day, this concept is set to first launch in China markets. If it’s anything like the Seltos, the automaker is testing popularity in markets that may find it more practical. After all, does the market really need another compact SUV or hatchback crossover? Following the Kia “Opposites United” design philosophy, the style of the EV5 Concept is unique from all angles.
Of course, there is no doubting this is a Kia with the new “Tiger Face” front fascia – clean, strong, and robust, this is the look EVs are going for to flex next to their gasoline-powered siblings. Like the EV9, a Star Map signature lighting system introduces constellations in the fascia. An aerodynamic-enhancing roof spoiler follows in the rear. Sculpted lines, square fenders, and a powerful stance, the EV5 Concept rides on 21-inch wheels.
The interior is meant to be relaxing, with themes of Healing, Caring and Re-Charging. That last one is a theme the average consumer feels every day. With a calming interior palette of colors, a wide panoramic display provides the consumers with content. Also like the EV9, the EV5 Concept will offer a lounge mode when in parking, able to swivel the front seats back and have a chat with your third-row passengers. Also puts a whole new meaning on, “Don’t make me come back there.”
The full-length panoramic sunroof doubles as a solar panel. We saw this concept back when on the first concept of the Kia Telluride SUV, and it never happened. Advanced bridge lighting technology that can enhance moods were also a promise that didn’t come true. Maybe the technology for this sort of thing is more doable in a BEV, or car tech finally caught up. Not just technical, the seats, doors, dashboard, and headliner are all made from various sustainable items, including plant-based materials like seaweed extract and upcycled PET bottles – no more animal leather. There isn’t a whole lot of information just yet about performance specs or driving range, but we can expect similar data to the EV9 – the EV5 concept is more or less a compact SUV. We’re sure more information will be available soon. Stay updated on new Kia models when you follow along with us on Miami Lakes Automall social media .
