Kia EV9 Premier - Electric SUV

In September 2022, the Kia EV9 was spied to be in its final testing phase. It was only a matter of time before the automaker finally stopped teasing the reveal of the EV9 and give us all the details. In March 2023, the Kia Corporation finally revealed full images of the exterior and interior design of the Kia EV9, but continues to hide specs and entertainment options from the public eye. We’re unclear on what the powertrain will be, just that this might be the last model to use the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), developed by the Hyundai Motor Group (HMG). Continuing Kia’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy, the EV9 is sure to highlight its unique combination of sleek, sculptural shapes and geometry while keeping the SUV striking and serene.

“The Kia EV9 breaks new ground, aiming to redefine standards for design, connectivity, usability and environmental responsibility…The Kia EV9 offers customers an exceptionally high-quality proposition and a fresh EV perspective in the family SUV sector. This new vehicle typology provides instinctive experiences and excellent comfort for not just the driver, but all occupants, through innovative use of space, technology and design.” – Karim Habib, Executive Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design Center

AS we said, this might be the last model year for the E-GMP. HMG is set to release two new electric vehicle (EV) platforms for future Hyundai and Kia software-defined vehicle models. For now, however, the E-GMP is the winning platform that helps make the EV9 possible. No information on the powertrain, but there is a neat bit of info about the name. Some consumers may be wondering what happened to the EV7 or EV8 – why jump to nine? Although there will most likely not be an EV7 or EV8, the Kia EV9 SUV is officially the ninth all-electric model to join the growing lineup of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) by Kia.

Exterior Design Highlights

A pillar of the new design philosophy is “Bold for Nature”. Combining natural and material elements, the EV9 has rugged capability for all conditions while presenting a scene of serenity for the future of BEV design. Similar to the EV6, the front fascia comes with a “Digital Pattern Lighting Grille” and jagged, vertical headlamps that accentuate the new “Digital Tiger Face” Kia is tinkering with as the new face of its BEV lineup. The tiger-nose grille will still pop-up on internal combustion engine (models), but the automaker has shifted most of its resources towards alternative powertrain systems. Featuring two clusters of small cube lamps within each headlamp, the EV9 also comes with the innovative ‘Star Map LED daytime running lights (DRLs), seen previously in teaser ads, programmed with an animated lighting pattern.

The side profile combines the strong SUV identity with aerodynamic efficiency. Noted above, geometry is a strong role in the new design philosophy, and the triangular fender structures and highly pronounced geometric wheel arches give the body a determined look and solid structure with its polygonal elements. Flush door handles seem to be the new design in many vehicles on the road today, along with a tapered or swept-back roof to give a sense of motion. In the rear, slim rear lights mirror the design in the front, and clean lines along the taillight help to boast the EV9’s strong and confident stance.

Interior Design Highlights

Kia’s designer team put a large focus on space, comfort, and technology for all passengers of the EV9 SUV. Thanks to E-GMP and long wheelbase of the EV9, a completely flat BEV architecture makes it easy to create a generous interior space for all occupants. Able to connect with one another and relax in lounge-style cabin of three rows, the EV9 offers seating formats for six- and seven-occupant seating to offer more options and seating configurations for space, comfort, and riding experience. For instance, the “lounge-style” isn’t just the style of the interior cabin – the front and second-row seats can recline and rest while the EV is charging, the first-row seats can swivel around 180 degrees and foldup the second-row seats to make a table and play some cards; the second-row seats can swivel 180 degrees to interact with the third row; and the third-row seats comer with cup holders and charging points. It really does sound like a mobile lounge.

A user-friendly design, the open, floating panoramic dashboard offers a lot more space for the driver and passenger, getting rid of the middle column that stretches from the seatback to the dashboard. Some classy and modern tech appears in the form of two 12.3-inch touch screens integrated with a one 5-inch segment display to make everything digital. Storage space has also grown with options in the center console. The new high-definition audio visual, navigation and telematics (AVNT) screen gives the driver the ability to engage and interact with their digital world via the extended display (touch screens), and an array of hidden type touch buttons offers control over heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC).More specs are set to be released in late March 2023 during the global premier of the Kia EV9.
