Kia Reveals More Options and Tech for Kia EV9
The Kia Corp has switched its resources to all-electric vehicles in recent years, and after sharing their business plans during the Kia 2022 CEO Investor Day, it became clear the automaker’s original Plan S Strategy is already pushing forward. The Kia EV6 was a smash hit, and soon to follow was the Kia EV9. Initial details about the design were shared just a few weeks ago, and now that the Kia EV9 is nearing dealership delivery, more information, such as the drivetrain and technology have also been released. Powertrain
Riding on the same Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) of the Kia EV6, the Kia EV9 comes with two configurations. The base drivetrain is a rear-wheel drive (RWD) standard model, powered by a 76.1-kWh battery. This is the only battery pack for the standard RWD. If consumers are looking for more power, they can get a 99.8-kWh battery that can be equipped on the RWD Long Range model and all-wheel drive (AWD) variants. This makes for some interesting powertrain configurations.
- The RWD Standard model is powered by an electric motor able to generate 160 kW / 350 Nm (214 HP/258 lb-ft of torque). Able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 8.2 seconds.
- The RwD Long Range model is equipped with a slightly weaker motor for the extra range, a 150 kW / 350 Nm (201 HP/258 lb-ft of torque) electric motor. This model can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 9.4 seconds.
- The AWD variant of the EV9 comes with two electric motors, generating a total output of 283 kW/600 Nm (379 HP/443 lb-ft of torque). Able to be accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 6.0 seconds. Stellar performance, and with an optional Boost feature available via the Kia Connect Store, the torque goes up to 516 lb-ft, and decreasing the acceleration time to 5.3 seconds.
The target range of the RWD Long Range model is 541 km (335 miles), riding on 19-inch wheels. With an ultra-fast 800 Volt charging system, the battery pack can charge up in approximately 15 minutes. The EV9 can also discharge energy from the vehicle battery. This allows families to use up to 3.68 kW of power for laptops or camping equipment.
Highway Driving Pilot – Level 3 Autonomy
Being introduced in the EV9 is a large step towards full autonomy. Called Kia’s Highway Driving Pilot (HDP) system, the EV9 with come with conditional Level 3 autonomous driving. Outfitted with 15 sensors, including two LiDARs, enable it to scan for and detect objects in a full 360-degree field of view, enabling it to detect and react to the road and potential collisions. Able to provide real-time assistance across a wide range of conditions, Kia’s HDP meets the criteria required for Level 3 autonomy in many parts of the world. It will be available in select variants, including an EV9 GT-line model. More information will be disclosed as the model gets closer to market availability.
Kia Connect Store
The Kia Connect Store will become the home base for upgrading many digital aspects of the EV9 and other Kia BEVs via Over-the-Air (OTA) updates. These can cover a wide range, from aesthetics like changing the EV9’s ‘Digital Pattern Lighting Grille to feature a chosen lighting pattern, or increasing the performance of the AWD EV9 as mentioned above. For a more thrilling experience, that optional Boost is a lot like the boost technology we’ve seen pop up in competitor models. Kia’s Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 will also be a new feature, seen in the promo for the Hyundai Motor Group Automatic Charging BEV Robot. There will also be content available to stream through the Kia EV9 Audio Visual, Navigation, and Telematics (AVNT) system.
