“Out with the old and in with the new” – or in Rams case, in with the old and in with the new. What Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is now referring to as the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic actually launched back in 2012. While gradual improvements were made to the Ram over the years, surprisingly the basic design has actually been on the market for the past six years.
“As we launch the all-new 2019 Ram 1500, we didn’t want to walk away from a key part of the light-duty truck market,” explains Mike Manley, head of Ram Brand — FCA. “Ram will continue to produce the 1500 Classic targeted at entry and commercial buyers.”
The 2019 Ram 1500 Classic will feature three cabs and three bed lengths, plus 4×2 and 4×4 drivetrains. Available engine options include a standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and an optional 5.7-liter V8 engine. Later on this year, a 3.0-liter V6 engine will be available as well. Lastly, a new “Classic” badge will be the cherry on the Ram cake and will set it apart from the rest. Pricing for the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic has yet to be announced, however, it will be sold simultaneously with the next-generation 2019 Ram 1500 – its replacement. Consumers can expect pricing towards the fourth-quarter launch of the truck.
For those consumers interested in a more economical option, the 2019 Ram 1500 is the perfect choice. For the 2019 model year, the Ram 1500 will be available in two flavors – 4×2 and 4×4. The Ram 1500 will also be available in four trim levels – Tradesman, Express, Big Horn/Lone Star, and Special Services Vehicle (SSV). The standard engine is a 3.6-liter V6 24-valve (that generates 305 hp and 269 lb-ft torque) and an optional 5.7-liter V8 HEMI engine (that generates 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. The V6 and V8 engines are paired to an eight-speed 850RE automatic transmission, with the V6 able to opt-in for an eight-speed 8HP75 transmission. The interior cabin has also been enhanced, and one of the most popular optional upgrades is the 12-inch touchscreen display. Also, there are five USB ports in the center console and a wider docking area available for optional wireless charging of a small tablet, 15-inch laptop, or smartphone .
However, besides the amazing features included, the 2019 Ram 1500 is actually longer, lighter, and wider than the Ram 1500 Classic. Depending on the body style, the 2019 Ram 1500 wheelbase and cab increase by 4-inches and the truck itself is 0.5-inches wider. Additionally, if consumers prefer the popular crew cab 4×4 variant, they might notice a change in the weight of the truck – 225 lbs to be exact. Not to worry, other versions have also dropped a few pounds as well.
When asked about the potential confusion that consumers may have between the Ram 1500 and Ram 1500 Classic, head of Ram Brand FCA-North America, Jim Morrison had this to say, “ One of the things that clearly delineates it is the new trucks all have the new body style and the R – A – M grilles,” he said. “The old trucks are the old body style with the crosshair grille, so at 50 feet you can tell them apart.”
