Coming Soon: 2020 Ram Power Wagon

December 5th, 2018 by

As the 2019 Detroit Auto Show nears, it’s not unreasonable to think that automakers are putting the final touches to their latest designs. A new batch of spy photographers recently captured what’s presumed to be the 2020 Ram Power Wagon and lucky for us, it was testing on the open road without any camouflage. Let’s see what industry experts say to expect from the Power Wagon judging by these spy photos.

Observers of the supposed Power Wagon state that the truck appears to carry over the current-generation 2500-inspired Heavy Duty passenger cab, which comes as a shock since the 2019 Ram 1500 received a proper upgrade. However, it appears that the major changes for the cabin are happening in the interior despite the carryover cab structure. The spy photographers claim that nearly everything within reach for passengers will either be new or significantly refreshed.

The hood styling appears to sport a bolder forward-leaning grille and headlights with a sculpted and chiseled design. Around the headlights is the grille trim which underscores how much larger the front of this heavy duty Power Wagon is when compared to the 1500. Ram’s signature crosshair grille was ditched across the lineup and the Power Wagon is no exception – the spied 2020 model boasts a distinctive grille segment that appears as if its surrounded by a mesh “mustache.” A new bed comprised of higher-strength steel and a composite tailgate were both designed to reduce the overall weight, with the addition of aluminum skins for the doors and hood.

Powertrain options are not expected to change with the standard 410 horsepower 6.4-liter HEMI engine slated to carry over, but that doesn’t mean that the Power Wagon won’t be the most capable version of itself yet. Front suspension will be improved with the brand’s Articulink design that incorporates high movement joints at the control-arm-to-axle mount that allows for serious flexibility and axle articulation. An electronically-disconnecting sway bar allows even more suspension flex as it allows the front axle to absorb and exert movement independently of the truck’s frame. Additionally, a 12,000-pound Warn winch will also be integrated in the front bumper – a staple for a heavy duty truck.

Given the Ram brand’s penchant for innovation and redesign lately, it’s no doubt that the 2020 Power Wagon is sure to feature substantial improvements. According to experts and enthusiasts alike, the 2020 Power Wagon will debut at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit this upcoming January (2019). The starting price has not been made public, but it’s safe to assume that the Power Wagon will remain within the same ballpark as the current model-year’s base MSRP of $54,540 (plus destination fee). Ram declined to comment on the latest spy shots, but it’s expected that the Ram Power Wagon will roll across dealer lots in the fall of 2019.
