Purchasing a pickup truck can sometimes be a tricky process, specifically concerning how big the bed is, its towing capabilities, and engine power, among other things. Unfortunately, when buying a pickup truck, fuel efficiency usually isn’t at the top of the priority list. Today, as modern technology evolves, fortunately, so does engine technology. Currently, a lot of trucks offer impressive horsepower, plenty of torque, high payload ratings, and all while saving consumers a few bucks at the pump. And so, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has launched a new eTorque 48-volt mild hybrid system on its all-new 2019 Ram 1500 V8 and V6 engines – prompting some impressive MPG figures.
When equipped with the 3.6-liter V6 engine, 4×2 configuration, and the new eTorque technology, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the 2019 Ram 1500 can deliver 20 mpg in the city, 25 on the highway, and 22 mpg combined (with real-wheel drivetrain). Additionally, once the pickup truck has the four-wheel drive added, all three MPG numbers drop by one number – 19 mpg in the city, 24 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg combined. Those are significant improvements in comparison to last year, which without the eTorque system, the Ram 1500 had a maximum fuel efficiency of 17 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 20 mpg combined.
Furthermore, when the 2019 Ram 1500 is loaded by the more powerful 5.7-liter V8 eTorque system, the EPA figures show 17 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway, and 19 mpg combined – once in two-wheel-drive. Clearly, the numbers decrease a little bit and are still good. Fortunately, because of the mild-hybrid capabilities of the 48-volt system, the 2019 Ram 1500 eTorque system essentially combines the advantages of idling on battery power when the engine is on and the effortless acceleration of an electric motor before slowly transitioning to all-gas power.
In taking the place of the standard alternator, the 2018 Ram 1500’s eTorque system offers a ten-horsepower electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack, along with the conventional lead-acid battery. For the 2019 model year, the body of the Ram 1500 is the model for efficiency through engineering. Due to the Ram’s innovative multi-link coil and solid-rear axle arrangement, frequency response damping shock absorbers, and the enhanced aerodynamics, the smaller electric motor delivers more refined and smoother gear shifts. Also, the Ram 1500 sheds about 225 pounds thanks to those improved aerodynamics, and with a towing capacity of nearly 13,000 pounds, the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 certainly doesn’t sacrifice capabilities either. All-in-all, it’s clear why the 2019 Ram 1500 wins the title as the most efficient full-size pickup truck on the market.
