Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Receives a 5-star Safety Rating from the Latin NCAP
Mitsubishi Motors has been going through some changes lately, ever since the automaker became a part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. The automotive group has been waiting for the Japanese automaker to come out with a brand new model to introduce to their respective regions, but since the announcement, we haven’t really seen anything. We’re expecting to see a new battery-electric vehicle (BEV) from Mitsubishi and the Alliance, but we only got the gasoline-powered Mitsubishi xForce, said to be the new core model for Mitsubishi. All bets are on the Ampere BEV facility to be the jumping off point for the new BEV, but as of now, the Mitsubishi Outlander is the crowning achievement for the automaker, and it would seem it’s not just winning awards for safety in America, like the Top Safety Pick from IIHS. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV just got a 5-star rating from the Latin New Car Assessment Programme (Latin NCAP).
The Latin NCAP is a lot like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). A company based on the systematic testing of vehicle crashworthiness, Latin NCAP tests cars in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and rates them based on several crash tests. Replicating similar consumer testing programs developed over the last thirty years in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia that already have a lot of credibility and have proven to be effective in improving the safety of automobiles on the road today, the NCAP has been publishing its own results since 2010.
Although the Outlander PHEV has architectural differences due to the placement of the powertrain, it can still be run through the same tests as every other vehicle in the industry. The Latin NCAP performed a frontal impact test, side impact test, side pole impact test, whiplash test, pedestrian protection test, a test checking out Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) in the city and interurban, and even a moose test, but it’s not how it sounds. It does test the evasive maneuvering ability of the vehicle, though. Achieving at least 85-percent in all tests, plus its advanced safety systems available, the Outlander PHEV showed overall good performance, a stable structure in the case of impact, and good protection for adults and passengers. Child occupant protection was a little lacking, but that didn’t deter the PHEV from receiving a five-star safety rating.
Reviewing every new car that comes from Mitsubishi Motors, we already know the safety precautions that went into the production of the Outlander PHEV, as well as other models in the lineup. For 2023, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV came with a number of advanced safety features that make it an even safer choice on the road. These include forward collision mitigation with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning plus, and blind spot warning with lane change assist and rear cross traffic alerts, driver attention alert, and rear parking sensors. For high-tier models, Mitsubishi even introduced a semi-autonomous feature called MI-PILOT Assist that controls acceleration, brakes, and steering for the driver when driving long distances.
