The Evo has inspired a whole new generation of tuners to take the plunge under the hood and make their cars unique from those everyone buys at their local Mitsubishi dealer . So we put together a list of some of the more popular Evo mods. These are basic mods, so that means that with only a novice set of tools and a little mechanical ability you can perform these modifications—all you need is patience and an Evo.
Tuning
This is the single most worthwhile modification you can make. BUT there’s a catch, you need to get all of your componentry set in place first. If you decide a week or two after your tuning that you want to change another component, swap out your fuel pump for example, then you might need to recalibrate everything to accommodate.
Flashing the computer, i.e. resetting the on-board computer manually though connecting a laptop to the car’s OBD-2 plug, is the most basic way to clear any error codes. Sometimes this is all that is needed to prompt automatic adjustments between the main computer and any new upgrades. Often times the resulting recalibration will deliver the advertised power and gas milage results instantly.
Brass Shifter Bushings
This is a controversial choice because it doesn’t yield any true horsepower gains but, it goes a long way to creating an all-around better ride for the EVO driver. The stock EVO design yields a shifter stiffness that some find a little wobbly, luckily the fix is cheap and quick. The bushings in question are locating near the firewall, just under the master cylinder.
You shouldn’t have to move any other parts out of your way but you will need to make sure that you install the bottom shifter cable first. Otherwise the bottom cable will be almost impossible to manipulate with the top cable in the way. As long as you take your time, find a good set of instructions, and remember to clean off your surfaces before installing the new bushings, everything will go smooth and your shifting will have a new level of crispness.
Air/Fuel Ratio Gauge
This one is at the far end of the “basic” mod list because many models require some welding. However the control delivered with this upgrade is worth the extra hassle.
An air fuel ratio gauge plugs into your exhaust system and interprets the particulates in the exhaust mixture in order to give you a readout display of the air to fuel mixture being fed into your combustion chambers.
