As the auto market makes its shift to more green vehicles, there will soon be a tipping point where electric vehicles (EVs) and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) will be the more popular option. That day might still be a while away, with many drivers still in favor of gasoline options, but the industry shows no signs of keeping those on the table for very long. With alternative fuel the new trend for automobiles, consumers will want to know what is the best vehicle on the market, and if going by green standards, the source to turn to is the Green Car Journal . Hosting the 2023 Green Car Awards, Green Car Journal awarded the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV as the “2023 Family Green Car of the Year™.

“What a great way to kick off the launch of the 2023 Outlander PHEV…This vehicle is the flagship of Mitsubishi Motors – clean and quiet electric motoring for up to 38 miles, the ease of refueling and convenience of a gasoline engine, a style that sets it apart from other vehicles on the road, and room for the whole family across three rows of seats. With the engineering of the hybrid system designed to maximize ‘EV-ness,’ it’s clear how Outlander PHEV plays a pivotal role as part of our Environmental Targets 2030, as we target a 40 percent reduction in global CO2 emissions.” – Mark Chaffin, MMNA President and CEO

This wouldn’t be the first time. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV took home two awards during the 2019 Green Cars Awards, with Mitsubishi Motors earning the 2020 Family Green Car of the Year™ award and the 2020 Green Car Product of Excellence™. 2022 actually marks the third time in the last five years that the world’s best-selling PHEV SUV has been recognized by Green Car Journal .

Is the name a little unfamiliar? For a quick look at Green Car Journal , the publication has a large focus on green vehicles and environmentally friendly energy and technologies in the automotive industry, with some interest in other industries as well. Awarding automakers for their efforts and accomplishments in producing vehicles in the ever-growing eco-friendly car segment, and the Outlander PHEV was recognized for its brilliant combination of environmental performance and family-friendly versatility. Called a “crossover” during the competition, many would still consider this model an SUV, with a maximum cargo volume of 102.1 cubic-feet inside the cabin, 101.0 cubic-feet when equipped with a sunroof.

One of the leading plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in the industry, the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is powered by a 2.4 liter inline-four-cylinder engine, a 60kW motor in the front and a 70kW motor in the rear, able to generate a combined 248-horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. Equipped with a larger battery pack than the 2022 model, the PHEV has an all-electric range (AER) of up to 38 miles, with 420 miles of overall range thanks to a new fuel tank adding 0.2 more gallons. Starting at $39,845 (plus destination fee), the Outlander PHEV is already off to a great start, and the optional new Tech package can make it even better, adding a new power panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, and a Bose Premium Audio system with nine speakers. No wonder Green Car Journal awarded the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV as the 2023 Family Green Car of the Year™.
