Kia Telluride and Stinger Rank High During 2020 J.D. Power APEAL Study
Kia Motors has been doing wonderfully this year, even with this temporary shutdown with the COVID-19 pandemic, this is an automaker that can bounce back and continue to reign in the good news. Some of this good news comes from recent awards and best of lists, but some of the largest news comes from automotive studies conducted by J.D. Power. At the beginning of July 2020, we got word of Kia Motors ranking as the highest non-luxury brand in the 2020 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS) for another year. Going on 34 years, the J.D. Power IQS tests the quality of new vehicles after 90 days of ownership. A second study quickly followed the IQS, the 2020 J.D. Power Automotive Performance Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study™, and Kia Motors had three more vehicles highlighted for receiving the highest ranks in their car segment.
Like the IQS, J.D. Power sends out thousands of surveys to owners and lessees of new model-year vehicles after 90 days of ownership. Now in its 25th year, the study was redesigned for 2020. This year, the study was modified to better measure an owners’ emotional attachment and level of excitement with their new vehicle across 37 attributes. The 2020 APEAL study was conducted between February 2020 to May 2020, and the data compiled is from a collection of 87,282 answered surveys. The survey results are then translated into the overall APEAL index score measured on a 1,000-point scale. Kia Motors received a score of 844.
Three vehicles from Kia Motors also store some of the spotlight during the 2020 APEAL Study. The Kia Telluride received the highest rank for the Upper Midsize SUV segment. Alongside the Telluride, the Kia Stinger was also the highest ranked vehicle for its segment, the Midsize Premium Car. Joining these vehicles was the Kia Rio, ranked third for the Small Car segment in the APEAL study.
“At Kia, we take pride in delivering a world-class ownership experience, whether customers are interested in driving a bold, capable three-row SUV like the Telluride, or the head-turning, powerful Stinger…We are honored to win not just one, but two segments in the APEAL study, which further reinforces the brand’s ‘Give It Everything’ approach to each model we build.” – Sean Yoon, President & CEO, Kia Motors America, Kia Motors North America
Shining a little more light on these vehicles, the Kia Telluride recently received the new Nightfall Edition , a type of “blacked-out” appearance package for the 2020 Kia Telluride. This includes gloss black elements such as gloss black roof rails, gloss black greenhouse trim/lower door side molding, gloss black skid plates, gloss black front bumper side air-duct garnish, gloss black emblems, all-new unique “Kia” logos, the radiator grill in black finish, LED headlamps and fog lamps with black inner bezels, and 20-inch wheels in black finish with black lug nuts and center caps. Although these components are all blacked-out, Kia does offer the 2020 Kia Telluride Nightfall Edition in Snow White Pearl, Everlasting Silver, Gravity Gray, Ebony Black, Sangria, Black Copper, Dark Moss, and Wolf Gray (new for Nightfall). Available on the Telluride EX with all-wheel drive (AWD) (with Premium package), SX AWD, and SX Prestige package, the Nightfall Edition is a perfect addition to the Telluride.
Although J.D. Power covered the 2020 Kia Stinger for the APEAL Study, the Kia Stinger is getting a mid-cycle refresh for 2021 . Along with an upgraded 3.3L V6 engine capable of producing 380 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque, the Kia Stinger got a bit of a facelift to match the new Kia Motors style. Inside, a new fully digital instrument cluster is available, along with a 10.25-inch touchscreen and the UVO infotainment system. It’s a nice upgrade for the powerful sports car.
