The Kia Soul is getting a more powerful engine and has also been rated as more safe.

The 2016 Soul will include a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder turbo-charged engine. It will have

201 horse power and 195 pounds per feet of torque. That’s an increase of 37 horsepower and 44 pounds per feet of torque. The Soul will come with either an automatic transmission or a six-speed manual transmission.

There are also rumors that Kia is developing a Soul model with all-wheel drive, though the reports have not been confirmed. It is also planning to improve the suspension and upsize the brakes.

The improvements were planned for the 2015 model, but Kia was not able to finish development in time. The changes are now expected with the 2016 model, which will debut near the end of next year.

Kia has improved the crash safety rating for the Soul. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Soul a “good” rating for the small overlap front test for 2015, which is up from “poor” for the previous year. The test involves scenarios such as hitting the driver’s side of the car into a pole. It doesn’t involve head-on crashes, but rather glancing front-end crashes. (Think of swerving at the last minute and hitting the other car with the side of your front end.)

The IIHS now rates the Kia Soul as a Top Safety Pick. This designation is given to vehicles that are rated “good” in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests.
