As we draw ever nearer to 2022, automotive journalists and publications are rounding up all the data they have. Compiling reviews and votes, analyzing their findings, and putting together lists of the “Best of” cars for this or for that, families or adventure, best interiors, best user experience, best of everything. Around this time of year, vehicles have also been selected to be featured in the 2022 Car of the Year (COTY) awards. Once again, Kia Corp has done it again. Within the same year as its release, the Kia EV6 has been shortlisted for the final round of the 2022 COTY awards.

“Kia is proud to be standing shoulder to shoulder with some of the greatest examples of modern mobility. After the two nominations of Ceed in its first and third generation and the one for Stinger, the nomination of the brand new EV6 is recognition of our progress and highlights our commitment to providing sustainable mobility solutions. We wish all other nominees the best of luck in the Car of the Year Awards.” – Jason Jeong, President at Kia Europe

This definitely wouldn’t be the first time Kia has landed on the COTY awards, or their complementary list, the World Car of the Year (WCOTY) Awards. Not to be confused as one or the other, the COTY awards exist to highlight national and regional models, whereas the WCOTY includes some vehicles that may be unavailable in individual regions, as long as they are not limited to those regions. The WCOTY is also administered by a non-profit corporation, under the guidance of a Steering Committee of distinguished automotive journalists from Asia, Europe, and North America. Nevertheless, earlier this year, the 2021 Kia Sorento and 2021 Kia K5 landed in the Top 10 the World Car of the Year (WCOTY) Awards.

So it’s no surprise that another Kia model would make it into the official COTY awards. The all-electric crossover was released this year, with the First Edition EV6 selling out fast. And people say the U.S. is slow to adopt electric vehicles (EVs)? The EV6 is joined by about 60 other models competing to win an award, having been selected by 61 COTY jurors from 23 countries. This year a total of 39 models made the final list of candidates for Car of the Year 2022 award, and the short list narrows it down to just seven vehicles. We’ll know for sure if Kia is the winner in February 2022, but for now, we can’t think of any reason why it wouldn’t. Interestingly enough, the shortlist is dominated by all-electric cars this year.

Many automakers are working towards new lineups dedicated to alternative fuel and electric alternatives. The European Union Commission is law when it comes to the standards and regulations for CO2 emissions, and the line gets lower every year. Most automakers have to pass the standards to be able to sell the vehicle globally. Although some automotive groups are dragging their feet, Kia Corp has been producing EVs for years. The EV6 is a culmination of the best the automaker has to offer, starting with its E-GMP platform, a dedicated platform for EVs now and in the future of the automaker’s lineup.
