Kia EV6 Earns 2022 TSP+ Rating from IIHS
Whilst automakers work towards a greener future with electric vehicles (PHEV) and other alternative fuel sources, car technology and safety has also been increasing. We try not to play favorites, but Kia Corp has been upping the ante for entertainment and safety features for years now. Starting with the Kia Drive Wise Package , an assortment of advanced safety features can be added to any vehicle to increase the safety of the driver and passengers. In 2022, Kia earned eight Top Safety Pick and Plus ratings from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), and before the year’s end, the automaker can add one more to the list – the 2023 Kia EV6 has been awarded the IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ (TSP+) rating for 2022.

Oh, we love the Kia EV6 here, there is no way around that. Available in two sizes, consumers can get a 58.0 kWh and 77.4 kWh battery to power the electric motor, able to generate 167 horsepower with the former and 225 horsepower for the latter. With choosing the 77.4 kWh battery, consumers can also choose all-wheel drive for the Kia EV6, and this makes it even more powerful with a 70kW front motor and a 160kW rear motor that yields 320 horsepower, or a 60kW front motor and a 270kW rear motor that yields 576 horsepower. The latter is the setup for the Kia EV6 GT that sold out in seconds when the first edition was released. Even with all that power, the EV6 is as safe as they come according to the IIHS.
IIHS has been around for a while now, but a little recap on how their rating works. The IIHS measures a vehicle’s crashworthiness, as in how well it will handle an auto incident and whether or not it can mitigate the risk if not help avoid it altogether. This means advanced safety features are becoming a lot more prevalent in the auto industry, and Kia Corp has it covered. The IIHS puts vehicles through seven crash tests to measure its crash avoidance and mitigation – driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, each side, roof strength, and a head restraint.
Based on how well a vehicle performs, it can receive either a “Poor”, “Marginal”, “Acceptable”, or “Good” grade, and a vehicle needs to receive a “Good” rating on all of these tests for the first half of the battle. Advanced safety features are also tested and rated as either “Basic”, “Advanced”, and “Superior”. If a vehicle receive a “Good” rating for crash tests and a “Superior” rating for their safety systems, then that vehicle earns itself a TSP+ from the IIHS. This is how the EV6 got its star as the third vehicle to earn a 2022 TSP+ rating, joining the 2022 Kia K5 and 2022 Stinger sedans. In 2022, seven Kia vehicles also earned a 2022 TSP rating, including the 2022 Kia Telluride, 2022 Sorento, 2022 Seltos, 2022 Carnival (built after March 2021 with specific headlights), 2022 Sportage (with optional front crash prevention and specific headlights), 2023 Sportage (with specific headlights), and the 2022 Soul.
