Despite the modern look and smaller size, the Jeep Renegade, especially the Renegade Trailhawk is equipped with the off-road capabilities that Jeep lovers want. Read below to learn about the off-roading features available on a few Renegade trims and all of the awesome off-roading features exclusive to the off-road demon, the Renegade Trailhawk.

Safety Rating

One of the great aspects about the compact Jeep Renegade is its safety ratings — it received a 4-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), so it is a great for off-roading and for families.

Off Roading Capabilities

The Renegade has a few different available systems that make the vehicle excellent for off-roading, but of all the trims, the Renegade Trailhawk has the most advanced off-roading features. Additionally, all Renegade trims have a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 pounds, which Jeep Renegade exterior means the Renegade can tow an ATV or motorcycle and has enough power to help other off-road vehicles that might be stuck in the mud.

Active Drive 4×4

A few Renegade trims are equipped with Active Drive 4X4, a system that features an exclusive rear axle disconnect feature that only engages when necessary for improved fuel efficiency. The system is paired with Jeep’s Selec-Terrain traction management system and it
allows drivers all-weather capability in four modes: auto, snow, sand and mud. The system also includes the standard brake lock differential that works with the 4×4 system to provide more handling and capability. Active Drive 4×4 is available on the Jeep Renegade Sport, Latitude and Limited trims.

Then there’s the Renegade Trailhawk, the best Renegade option for those who go off-road to explore or like to get down and dirty in the mud. Here are some of the exclusive features on the Renegade Trailhawk.

Hill Descent Control

Hill descent control is a standard Renegade Trailhawk feature. When driving 30 mph or less, the low-speed system helps drivers maintain a safe vehicle speed while descending hills while off-roading. The system can sense terrain conditions and will automatically adjust to a slightly slower set speed than normal when the terrain is rough.

Engine and Exterior Build

Unlike some of the other Renegade trims that come standard with a 1.4-liter engine, the Renegade Trailhawk is equipped with a 2.4-liter, I4 engine paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. The Renegade Trailhawk is also equipped with exclusive exterior and styling features.

Extra exterior features are included to further enhance the vehicle’s maneuverability and capability in tricky terrain. Unlike the other trims, the Trailhawk has a transfer case skid plate and a transmission skid plate, which helps protect the underside the vehicle from damage or from getting caught on obstacles when off-roading. It also has two front tow hooks and one rear tow hook, in case the vehicle or another vehicle gets stuck. The Trailhawk comes standard with a full-size spare tire and 17-inch rims. And of course, the Renegade Trailhawk comes with exclusive “Trail Rated” badging.

Extra Ground Clearance

If you know off-roading, you know that ground clearance is a big factor to a vehicle’s ability to crawl over rocks and navigate bumpy landscapes that have a lot of obstacles. So, Jeep engineers gave the Renegade Trailhawk extra ground clearances.

The Renegade Trailhawk has a 30.0 degree approach angle ground clearance at curb weight, which is an extra 9.5 degrees more than the other Renegade trims; a 25.7 degree breakover angle ground clearance (1.7 degrees more than other trims); and a 34.3 degree departure angle ground clearance (2.2 degrees more than other Trailhawk trims). Finally, the Renegade has an 8.7-inch ground clearance, which is an extra eight-tenths of an inch of running ground clearance than the other Renegade models.
