Jeep Gladiator 4Xe Hits a Bump in the Reveal Road

December 20th, 2021 by

It’s not every day a heavy-hitting automaker admits that the competition led them back to the drawing board. But Jeep is brave enough to hit the reset button, even amidst a successful refresh.

Of course, the Jeep Wrangler has always served at the forefront of Jeep’s affection. Since the Wrangler is the apple of the automaker’s eye, its recent refresh welcomed new trim packages and beefy off-road options like the factory’s 37-inch tires. However, these are mere examples of how Jeep knocks it out of the park with fresh, innovative redesigns.

Somehow the attention the Jeep Wrangler renders does not parallel to its first cousin once removed, the Jeep Gladiator pickup truck. According to Mopar Insiders, the transfer of the Wrangler’s prominent electrified 4Xe powertrain proved more difficult than Jeep anticipated.

Mopar Insider is a reliable source for automotive information, and if its reports are accurate, then the Jeep Gladiator 4Xe won’t be seen or heard until 2024. Unfortunately, the Gladiator 4Xe would surface one model year after the mid-cycle refresh of the esteemed Wrangler.

There are no expectations for wholesale alterations to the Wrangler. So It’s safe to assume that the Wrangler will endure fewer technological and feature upgrades necessary to contend against the Ford Bronco.

When properly equipped, the Ford Bronco Badlands trim with Sasquatch mode features Trail Turn Assist and an electronic disconnecting sway bar which is enough to leave any automaker shaking in its boots. But Jeep wants to ensure the Wrangler competes for the marathon and not just the race. So other Jeep projects fall to the waist, as the Wrangler takes precedence.

Several modes in the Jeep lineup engage electrons in the powertrain, such as the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. Moreover, Jeep unmasked an objective of a fully electrified lineup by 2025 , and with the Gladiator 4Xe extended a year, Jeep can still obtain that objective.

Although unfortunate, the Gladiator 4Xe has hit the pause button on Jeep’s DVR. So it’s not illogical for the Wrangler to hit center stage. After all, the Wrangler is Jeep’s most distinctive model.

At the time of writing, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4Xe consists of a 2.0-L turbocharged four with two electric motors paired with an eight-speed automatic. The tandem generates 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, plus 18 miles of all-electric range. So let’s anticipate modest enhancements for 2023.
