Jeep Expanding Diesel Engine on Future Jeep Lineup

To keep up with the EPA greenhouse gas emissions standards that automakers are required to meet before 2025, Jeep is expanding their diesel engine options to more vehicles in the lineup.

Jeep 3.0L EcoDiesel Engine

Though not confirmed, the Wrangler’s diesel engine is expected to be the same 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 that is available on the Grand Cherokee lineup and that is on the Ram 1500 HFE, which is another FCA vehicle. This engine produces 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque and it reduces less CO2 emissions and is more fuel efficient than the 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine that is currently used on the Wrangler.

This engine boosts the Grand Cherokee’s fuel economy to 22 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway and 22 combined mpg, which is an average of 4.5 mpg more than the 3.6-liter V6 engine. It also reduces the vehicle’s annual petroleum consumption by .4 barrels of petroleum per year.

It is also expected that this engine would be available on the 2018 Jeep Wrangler pickup truck, which is estimated to go into production in 2018. Following the Jeep Wrangler diesel truck, a hybrid Wrangler is supposed to be released in 2022.

Benefits of a Diesel Engine

There are a lot of benefits to diesel engines, including increased fuel efficiency, reduced CO2 emissions and increased torque. Though diesel engines cost more and the cost of diesel fuel is currently more expensive than the cost of gas, the savings in fuel economy can make up the difference in the long run. Additionally, diesel engines are believed to last longer and require less maintenance over time, so that’s another benefit.
