The Corvette is Chevy’s most classic car, and it has a long history of speed. Though it has seen its share of changes throughout the years, it remains one of the most recognizable cars of all time.

Looking back at the evolution of the Corvette, there are few models that stand out.

1955 Corvette

The 1955 model was the first V8-powered Corvette ever offered by Chevrolet dealers . Many car enthusiasts view it as the first “real” corvette for that reason.

To emphasize this change, Chevy made the “V” in the car’s emblem oversized and highlighted it in gold. In ads, the model was compared to a guided missile.

1963 Stingray

While certainly not the fastest Corvette model, the 1963 version was by far the classiest. It had a unique divided rear window that gave it a more modern feel.

The attention that was paid to style on this model was obvious. A long, smooth nose, peaked fenders, and a cropped back end gave it lots of character.

1997 Corvette C5

With improved structure, especially for the convertible option, this model was comfortable and great for an everyday drive. However, it was definitely sporty enough under the hood to keep things spicy.

2009 Corvette ZR1

The 2009 ZR1 received serious modifications and was the fastest Corvette ever built. It was produced with a 6.2 liter V8 engine that could get up to 638 horsepower.

Many other parts were upgraded too, including the chassis which were lighter weight, but comprised of extremely strong aluminum. A new magnetic suspension also gave it excellent handling and grip.

Corvette fans are still waiting for Chevrolet to top the performance of this model.
