2019 Chevrolet Onix Sedan Announced

March 28th, 2019 by

An announcement has been made. General Motors has announced the debut of the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Onix sedan in China, and it will debut “very soon.” Also, it’s expected Chevy will announce the new Onix in Brazil in the middle of this year.

At the end of 2018, the new Onix sedan was leaked, and this year it will introduce a new Redline variant. The Redline variant that Chevrolet has been rolling out is an equipment package across its models to better cater to younger demographics. The second-generation Onix will be the sixth Chevrolet model in China that will offer Redline trimmings, and it will join the Cruze, the new Malibu XL, Equinox, the new Monza and Orlando.

“The Onix continues the momentum across Chevrolet’s vehicle lineup that targets the ever-changing and diverse needs of our China customers,” said the general director of Chevrolet Scott Lawson, the automaker’s first venture in China that’s responsible for the Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac brands. The Onix will attract those who demand overall performance and value. GM says the 2019 Chevrolet Onix sedan will offer a meaningful exterior design while optimizing space and comfort in the passenger compartment.

Its “advanced technologies” will provide improved connectivity and efficient performance, traits that are typically not found in its segment. The 2019 Chevrolet Onix will be the first vehicle based on GM’s all-new GEM platform. Previously, GM announced that it would begin launching vehicles on the new architecture this year in China.

The company also revealed the first member of the new family vehicles would be a Chevrolet that meets the needs of Chinese consumers. The vehicle in question can very much be the new Onix. GEM is a car architecture derived from the GM VSS-F platform, but it was developed for specifically low-cost vehicles sold in emerging markets.

The 2019 Chevrolet Onix will not only exclusive to South America anymore, which is where it has achieved success by becoming the best-selling new car in the region. With the 2019 models, GM wants to expand the success of the Onix nameplate to another 40 developing countries around the world. To carry out its international expansion, the new Onix is set to be manufactured in both China and Brazil.

In Brazil, the new-generation Onix will continue to be manufactured at the GM Gravatai plant. It’s unclear which GM China plant will produce the new Onix. The car will officially premiere at the 2019 Auto Shanghai expo starting in a few weeks.

But for over six years the car manufacturer has been selling another model also named “Chevrolet Onix” in South America. No conclusion has been made on whether the company will discontinue the old Onix once the new one reaches China, or if it will continue to offer both models even though some confusion might be caused. Chevrolet has not commented.

Aside from the teaser pic that’s been circulating online, no other images are showing the vehicle in its full glory. If the teaser is any indication, the sedan/saloon will sport curved air intakes. It will be located at the sides of the front bumper, as well as a sectioned front grille.

Let’s note the change in the naming structure of the sedan variant for the Chinese market. In China, it will be called the Onix while in Brazil, the Onix Sedan is marketed as the Chevrolet Prisma. Second, the second-generation model has undergone a complete overhaul adopting a lot of Chevrolet design including the split front grille and a larger lower portion.

The new Chevrolet Onix in China will offer two new 3-cylinder engines. The base machine is a 1.3L LI5 naturally-aspirated unit that will deliver 102 horsepower, while the second engine in the higher-end models will be the turbo-charged 1.0L LIV and the motor will be 114 horsepower. There is no information available on the torque.

Testing of the second-generation Onix began in Brazil a few months ago, the hatchback and sedan body styles (as the Prisma) were tested. Maybe the vehicle will be introduced during the second half of 2019, after seven years of dominant market performance. In the Brazilian market, the Onix has been on the led for the best-selling model since August 2015.

Additionally to the Onix, the new GEM (Global Emerging Markets) platform will include a large family of entry-level models with distinct body styles for both Buick and Chevrolet line. Vehicles based in the GEM architecture will be fabricated in Brazil, China, Mexico, and India. The vehicle is expected to be marketed mainly in emerging markets in Asia as well as Latin America.
