The all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado is a monster among the crowd of light-duty pickups. The latest generation Chevrolet Silverado presently consists of four available powertrain options for customers. Among those powertrains are the base model, 4.3-Liter V6 engine, the upgraded options include a 2.7-Liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a hulking 5.3-Liter V8 engine, and last, but not least a 6.2-Liter V8 with Dynamic Fuel Management. Soon, a fifth engine option will be added by General Motors (GM) in the form of a 3.0-Liter inline-six turbo diesel. This new powertrain will be paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission and have auto stop/start technology. All considered General Motors engines are the most potent diesel trucks in the full-size pickup segment, but the goal going forward for GM and Chevrolet is to keep pushing the envelope.
Comparing Powertrains Against Different Brands
The upcoming Duramax inline-six engine aimed at coming out in 2020 will provide 277 horsepower paired with its10-speed automatic transmission. Neither the 2019 Ford F-150’s 3.0-liter V6 diesel with 250 horsepower nor the 2019 Ram 1500’s EcoDiesel with its 240 horsepower, reach even close to the 277 horsepower offered for the upcoming Chevy powertrain. (The Ram EcoDiesel is currently not available yet in 2019 for the latest generation Ram1500.)
When studying at the differences between torque, as known as the accurate measurement of an efficient diesel engine, Chevrolet is no slouch. The GM product will produce a Silverado with an incredible 460 lb-ft of torque available from just 1,500 rpm. This figure is more than Ford’s 440 lb-ft and the Ram’s 420 lb-ft of torque offered in the aforementioned rival pickup engine options. This kind of buzz has made for so much speculation, Chevrolet wound up addressing reports about the upcoming powertrain option.
Chevrolet Stands Behind Their Engineering
Chevrolet was proud to inform their customers, in a rare move commenting on an engine that has not been released. They released a statement to the automotive news collector, CarBuzz, about the upcoming powertrain.
“The all-new, Duramax 3.0L inline-six turbo diesel will deliver an SAE-certified 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, more than any other light-duty, full-size truck diesel available. Dealers and customers can place orders for the efficient, refined diesel and the first customer deliveries begin this summer. We will share more information, including towing capacity and efficiency, in the near future.” – Representative from Chevrolet
