The 2021 Ram 1500 Crew Cab Earns Top Safety Pick Rating

February 26th, 2021 by

The Ram 1500 is back and better than ever as it’s now considered the only pickup to earn a 2021 Top Safety Pick Rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Ram 1500 Crew Cab models equipped with the automaker’s Advanced Safety Group qualified for the top rating, also making this pickup the first to achieve such high marks back-to-back (2020 and 2021) from IIHS.

“A Top Safety Pick for the Ram 1500 solidifies our long-standing commitment to our customers through advanced technology and engineering expertise. This validation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety builds consumer confidence in our trucks and in the Ram brand,” said Mike Koval Jr., Ram Brand Chief Executive Officer – Stellantis.

The IIHS now requires Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking in order for vehicles to earn Top Safety Pick status. Ram’s technology is deemed as “advanced” according to the IIHS and works with the truck’s sensor-fusion Automatic Emergency Braking system. Ram’s sensor-fusion technology combines traditional cameras with radar sensors to determine if a frontal impact with another vehicle is imminent. If there is no response from the driver after numerous alers, the system automatically deploys the brakes to help avoid or mitigate the severity of the impact.

Part of Ram 1500’s available Advanced Safety Group package, Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking is also accompanied by Lane Departure Warning-Plus, Rear Cross Path detection, Blind-spot Monitoring with trailer coverage and Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop, Go and Hold. The brand’s Automatic Emergency Braking feature earned a distinction of “superior” — the highest possible rating — and is standard on the Laramie, Rebel, Longhorn, Limited Longhorn and Limited trims. The feature is also available on Tradesman and Bighorn trims that are equipped with the Level 1 Equipment Group package. A large part of the truck’s evaluation consisted of six IIHS crashworthiness tests, including three different types of frontal crashes. The remaining three other crashes mimic side, rear, and rollover impacts. The 2021 Ram 1500 Crew Cab earned the highest possible score in each crashworthiness test.

Those looking for a fuel-efficient pickup should look no further, as the Ram 1500 offers an eTorque mild hybrid system that improves fuel efficiency figures when paired with the standard V6 engine and the optional HEMI V8 engine. For the 2021 model year, the Ram 1500 is America’s most powerful half-ton pickup thanks to its 480 lb-ft of torque, and America’s most capable light-duty diesel pickups thanks to a towing capability figure of 12,560 pounds.
