Mitsubishi Motors may be holding back on us with its newest electrified automobile, but we’re all hoping that its recent investment into the Ampere battery-electric vehicle (BEV) facility will finally give life to something new. It’s been years, and the automaker is still milking the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid for everything it’s worth. Who could blame them, really? After all of the success of the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle overseas, and finally coming to the States years later, the Outlander PHEV has been a winner ever since. Winner of the Green Car Awards by Green Car Journal in 2020, 2021, and 2022, the plug-in hybrid does it again, named the “2024 Family Green Car of the Year” as part of Green Car Journal”s 2024 Green Car Awards.

“This year marks the first time in the history of the Green Car Awards that plug-in hybrids swept all three of our categories, and it’s no surprise that Outlander, the world’s best-selling plug-in hybrid and a four-time winner in the Green Car Awards, once again ranked among the best…The Outlander Plug-in Hybrid has been a perennial favorite of our editors because it offers so much confidence and convenience in such a clever, capable, and flexible package.” – Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCarJournal.com

Going on for 19 years now, the Green Car Awards™ highlights vehicles that go a little green and are more eco-friendly than what we usually see in the auto market. Placing a focus on vehicles, specifically new models that boast greater efficiency while also being environmentally friendly, the awards program is open to internal combustion engine models, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric vehicles. The auto industry shifting towards BEV technology, but a plug-in hybrid still dominated the 2024 Green Car Awards. That’s really saying something for the Outlander PHEV.

This marks the fourth time in the last six years that the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has won the honor of landing on the Green Car Journal annual awards program, but sweeping up three categories is the first time this has ever happened. This year also marks the second consecutive year that the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid has won the Family Green Car title. It’s clear why the automaker is taking its sweet time to release a BEV when its plug-in does so well. In the next five years, that could change, with the market soon to be saturated with electrified models, but until then, Mitsubishi is taking home the crown.

The latest rendition of the Outlander PHEV is even better. In 2023, the Outlander plug-in hybrid got tweaked a bit to deliver a better performance in terms of power and driving range. Today, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has a 38-mile all-electric driving range (AER). Thanks to its gasoline motor counterpart, the vehicle also provides an EPA-estimated 420 miles of total driving range. Add in Mitsubishi’s standard-equipment Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) all-wheel drive system, and this is a plug-in hybrid that can handle any kind of driving situation. Some say it can even go off-road, pushing its performance to maximum efficiency in all kinds of weather and road conditions.
