Mitsubishi Motors Concepts for Momentum 2030
Back in May 2024, Mitsubishi Motors North America announced its “Momentum 2030” Business Strategy. In summary, the North American branch is finally going to pay a little more attention to its lineup in the U.S. and Canada, and might just realize how lacking it really is. After discontinuing the Mitsubishi Mirage to make room for more models, we could do with fewer SUVs and crossovers, but it doesn’t seem like the automaker got the memo. Mentioned in the Momentum 2030 business plan were several concepts we thought Mitsubishi discarded years ago, all SUVs/crossovers, with plenty of unknown concepts for the new electrified lineup.
Engelberg Tourer
Making its first debut during the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, the Engelberg Tourer (seen above) was set up to be the replacement for the Outlander PHEV. Although the latter is a big winner overseas in Japan, it lost its allure in the States fairly quickly, selling less every quarter every year. The Engelberg Tourer looked promising, set up with Mitsubishi Motors Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system, and powered by a a plug-in hybrid powertrain made of two electric motors and a 2.4-liter gasoline engine. Able to offer an all-electric range (AER) of 22 miles, and a total driving range of 430 miles, it seemed like a great new entry into the lineup. We can only assume the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 ruined any plans to bring this to the lineup sooner.
e-Evolution
Another concept that we never saw come to fruition is the e-Evolution concept. Said to be the resurrection of the Evolution nameplate from the Lancer Evolution, the e-Evolution concept was said to be proof that a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) could also be a high-performance car. To back this up, the e-Evolution concept was powered by two high-torque, high-performance electric motors. We’d love to see that, but at the moment, a muscle car competitor has already released their high-performance BEV, and Mitsubishi Motors has some catching up to do. Said to come with artificial intelligence (A.I.), the e-Evolution was definitely a little too futuristic for its time, first revealed in 2018.
eX Concept
This one seemed pretty cool. Powered by two compact, high-output motors, the front and rear wheels are powered by a new drive battery able to deliver 70 kW of power. Equipped with Mitsubishi Motors (S-AWC) system, this was another high-performance concept that came with AI to give drivers a break on long road trips. It also seemed like a preview of car connected services with the ability to present the driver with information related to points of interest, recommendations for local events, and even send coupons to their smartphone. Like all the other concepts, it kind of just disappeared. According to the Momentum 2030 business plan, we might just see it make a comeback after all.
GC-PHEV and CA-MiEV
Ready to boot the Outlander PHEV, Mitsubishi Motors also has some electrified concepts on the horizon. Whether it’s the BEV in production between Mitsubishi and Nissan or something else, the GC-PHEV and CA-MiEV will introduce a highly efficient next-gen EV powertrain that’s ready to perform and go on an adventure. The former is made to deliver all-terrain performance, whereas the latter is designed with streamlined aerodynamics for better control when going for speed and taking sharp turns.
GR-HEV
A sport utility truck concept that delivers next-gen environmental and driving performance, we wonder if this is also one of the vehicles Nissan and Mitsubishi are working on. Powered by a 2.5-liter clean-diesel engine and an electric motor, it’s an interesting take on a plug-in hybrid. Also equipped with S-AWC system and next-gen Super Select 4WD, the GR-HEV is designed to provide responsive torque and tractability on rugged terrain. Mitsubishi Motors has been leaning more towards off-road vehicles over the last few years, and it seems to be a staple for its future North America lineup.
Concept AR
It seems like Mitsubishi has a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in mind. Not quite an SUV, not just a minivan, an MPV can blend the best of both worlds with active safety technology, next-gen infotainment systems, connected car services, and plenty of room in the interior cabin for passengers and cargo. We didn’t hear much about this one when it first debuted, but it seems like it’s in the lineup for Momentum 2030.
MiEV Evolution II
The Mitsubishi i-MiEV disappeared from the lineup a long time ago. A BEV that just didn’t do well in the States, we didn’t think we’d see another BEV from Mitsubishi for a while. Instead, Momentum 2030 introduced another Evolution nameplate powered by a modified high-output version of the original i-MiEV. Designed with state-of-the-art improvements in its engineering and construction, it looks more like a race car than a consumer car, but time will tell what happens to it.
