Miami Lakes Automall JDRF Diabetes Disney Run

Do you enjoy a good smile? Have you heard of the Walt Disney World marathons that go on a few times a year? The next one is the Walt Disney World Half Marathon, a 13.1-mile fundraising race to raise money for various charities depending on the race. It takes place January 7, 2017 and it is held to benefit the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS); runners may choose to raise funds for other causes and campaigns though.

That brings us to Ryan Oharriz, son of our own Alex Oharriz here at Miami Lakes Automall. Ryan was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of fifteen, and although a challenge, Ryan lives a happy and active life.

A family friend of the Oharriz’s, Jamelyn Trueba, is running in the Walt Disney World Half Marathon and has partnered with Team JDRF to raise funds for type 1 diabetes (T1D) research into the cure. Team JDRF is an organization that provides a fundraising platform for users to host events for, turn a favorite hobby, or what-have-you into a campaign to raise funds to find the cure for type 1 diabetes; like a crowdfunding campaign. For those that don’t know much about diabetes, T1D is a potentially life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, the hormone essential to the body’s ability to get energy from food.

It affects children and adults, but originally it was thought to only affect one of the two age groups due to improper education. This is how important it is to not only raise awareness but also find a cure; people are misdiagnosed, and doctors are left puzzled due to the sometimes misunderstanding of the different types of diabetes.

The good news is that diabetes is controllable. Many doctors have set up programs to help not only curb the effects of diabetes, but also enrich people’s lives.

Like other Team JDRF participants, Jamelyn has already set up a fundraising page for donations to support her campaign. Thanks to the support by many, she’s already reached her goal, but that’s no reason to not add a little more to help Jamelyn crush her goal. Do it for Jamelyn – do it for Ryan!
