The Kia EV9 has been getting so much attention lately, winning awards and titles left and right, like being named the “Family Car of the Year” during the TopGear.com Awards. We need to take some time to remember the models that started it all, like the Kia EV6, the first all-electric vehicle by Kia with no gasoline predecessor. This year, Kia UK has announced new special-edition “Horizon” models that we expect to see in America as well. The first two being released are the Kia EV6 Horizon and the Niro EV Horizon. Described as variations that focus on value, these new special editions can be classified as mid-tier trims in the lineup. Check out the new equipment added for each.

EV6 “Horizon”

In the UK, there are three main EV6 trims – Air, GT-Line, and GT-Line S. In America, there are five trims, with variations choosing rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), except for the base Light trim and the top-tier GT trim – Light, Light Long Range, Wind, GT-Line, and GT. According to Kia UK, the new “Horizon” trim sits between the base Air and the GT-Line models, so we expect the mid-tier for America would come right after the Wind trim. The Horizon edition adds several features to the EV6 to make it stand out and could be said to be built off of the Wind RWD, powered by a 77.4 kWh battery that powers a 320HP motor. It comes in Midnight Black, Interstellar Grey, or the new paint job for the EV6, Gravity Blue, and rides on 19-inch grey alloy wheels.

The exterior now comes with automatic body-colored flush exterior door handles. Flush door handles seem to be the new popular feature popping up on vehicles. Although it sometimes feels like you might break it off by pulling too hard, these new automatic flush door handles will pop out, avoiding the confusion of how to open a car door with them. Also added to the exterior is a solar glass windscreen to keep the interior from overheating, dual LED headlights with an adaptive driving beam, front parking sensors, a high gloss black door trim, and a smart power tailgate. Inside, the Horizon special edition trim adds a driver’s power adjustable memory seat, front passenger power seat with two-way electric lumbar support, heated second-row seats (not including the middle seat), and a wireless mobile phone charger. Converting the price from euros to USD, we’re looking at about $50,500 (plus destination fee). The 2024 Kia EV6 starts at $42,600 (plus destination fee).

Niro EV “Horizon”

The Niro EV continued the trend of many Kia models, but the original Niro was the world’s first hybrid crossover. Its popularity caused the Niro plug-in hybrid to be born, followed by the Niro EV. Available in two trims in both countries, the Niro EV Horizon will be the new second, making the Wave the third trim in the American lineup. The Niro EV Horizon comes with an assortment of exterior features, and comes with the standard Niro EV 64.8 kWh battery, powering a 201HP motor. Consumers have the choice of Mineral Blue, Interstellar Grey, or Midnight Black. The Niro EV “Horizon” rides on 17-inch alloy wheels.

The exterior of the Niro EV Horizon comes with LED headlights, front fog lights, rear privacy glass, electrically folding high gloss door mirrors, front parking sensors, and rain-sensing front wipers. Inside, consumers will find driver’s and front passenger auto up/down electric windows, black artificial leather upholstery, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, a driver’s power adjustable seat with aircell-type lumbar support, and a wireless mobile phone charger. Increasing safety for the Niro EV, the Horizon special edition also adds Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), Blind Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA), and Highway Driving Assist (HDA1.0). Converted to USD, the price is $42,000 (plus destination fee).
