The Kia Corp has been steadfast in progressing its “Plan S” Strategy to become a leading automaker in the world of electrified vehicles, especially battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). Back when it was still Kia Motors, the automaker launched Plan S with the objective of launching 11 BEVs by 2025 and obtain a 6.6 percent global EV market share. Over the last two years, Kia has launched the Kia EV6, Kia EV9,  Kia EV3, and the Kia EV4, with more to come, including the Kia EV5 concept and the Kia EV8. It’s still a ways off from 11 new BEVs, this portfolio of BEVs shows Kia’s commitment to developing automobiles that emit less carbon emissions, making them a more sustainable company altogether. That’s what landed them on the TIME magazine’s “World’s Most Sustainable Companies of 2024” list.

This year, TIME Magazine put together a roster of over 5,000 of the world’s largest and most influential companies that are known to reduce emissions and energy consumption relative to company size, as well as the proportion of renewable energy used by the company’s operations, and companies that have incorporated sustainability into their business models. Covering companies that make physical products, and those that don’t, such as like banking, tech, and consulting, TIME Magazine partnered with data firm Statista to develop methodology to assess a company’s sustainability. Held to high standards, each company was measured on external sustainability with a focus on adherence to the UN Global Compact, alignment with the Science Based Targets initiative, inclusion in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook, participation in the UNFCCC Race to Zero, and MSCI ESG & SRI evaluations. Environmental and social Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) from the companies’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reports were also included during the evaluation for the “World’s Most Sustainable Companies of 2024” list.

There is a ranking of sorts, supposedly where a company earns points that can earn a score up to 100.00. For Kia, the automaker earned a score of 58.95, landing them in the 327 slot for the list amongst the Automotive Industry & Suppliers category. With a growing portfolio of electrified vehicles, Kia has launched the Kia Sorento Plug-in Hybrid and Kia Sprotage Plug-in Hybrid, the Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid and Niro EV, and the Kia Soul EV in addition to the all-electric vehicles mentioned above. If we include the Sorento Hybrid and Sportage Hybrid, that’s already 11, excluding the original Niro hybrid crossover and the EV5 and EV8 concepts. With plans to build a BEV lineup of 15 models globally by 2027, the automaker surely deserves to be on TIME magazine’s “World’s Most Sustainable Companies of 2024” list.

“Kia is honored to be recognized in TIME’s ‘World’s Most Sustainable Companies of 2024’ list…This accolade reflects Kia’s commitment to electrified vehicles. Kia is driving towards a future where mobility is sustainable, efficient, and accessible to everyone. This distinction from TIME motivates us to further accelerate our efforts in creating a sustainable future for all.” – Steven Center, COO & EVP, Kia America
