2023 was some year, and 2024 is going to be a doozy. In two years, a lot of automakers plan to have an all-electric game plan by then, so we expect to see a lot of that happening over the course of the next twelve months (posted January 4, 2024). With the uncertain future of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) in the market, according to some sources, a lot of automakers went all out last year to secure the funds to invest in such a high risk over the next few years. Good news for Kia America, already bringing two BEVs to the states (Kia EV6 and Kia EV9), and posting an all-time best annual sales report for 2023.

“Kia is clearly a brand on the move. Our rugged SUVs and innovative EVs are our greatest strength, and demand across the Kia lineup reached all-time highs in 2023…Groundbreaking vehicles like our new flagship EV9 EV three-row SUV showcase Kia’s unique ability to elevate expectations and push boundaries, and we intend to accelerate our growth trajectory in 2024 with a combination of six all-new and significantly redesigned products scheduled to arrive in showrooms.” – Seungkyu (Sean) Yoon, president and CEO, Kia North America and Kia America

Up 13 percent year-over-year, advancing the 12 percent over the previous record set in 2021, a total of 782,451 units were sold in 2023. Also hitting an all-time record with 725,817 units sold through Kia dealers nationwide, there were six Kia models that definitely contributed to the success. These include the Kia Carnival (up by 93 percent), Kia Niro (up by 26 percent), Kia Seltos (up by 17 percent), Kia Sportage (up by 12 percent), Kia Telluride (up by 11 percent), and the Kia Forte (up by 7-percent). Also good news, sales of Kia’s electrified models increased 41 percent. This most likely doesn’t apply to just the Kia EV6 and Kia EV9 – the automaker also released electrified versions of models, like the Kia Sportage plug-in hybrid and the Kia Sorento plug-in hybrid. Still banking on its SUVs sales, the rugged and capable SUVs sales increased by 16 percent over and accounted for 72 percent of 2023’s annual sales total.

We covered a lot of the awards and accolades the Kia Corp received over the course of 2023, but with BEVs on its mind, there are several that stand out for the Kia EV9. The little brother of the EV6, but definitely a lot larger – theorized to be based on the massive Kia Telluride – got a lot of attention. The all-electric 2024 Kia EV9 has been named among Popular Science’s “2023 Best of What’s New” awards, was named to Car and Driver’s 2024 10Best Trucks and SUVs, and was named to the 2024 Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Awards list and recognized as the “Best 3-Row Electric Vehicle”. Speaking of being based on the Telluride, the 2024 Telluride was also named to Car and Driver’s 2024 10Best Trucks and SUVs, took the crown in the “Best Midsize SUV” segment for 2024 for the fifth consecutive year during the 2024 Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Awards list, and was named a segment winner by the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. ALG Residual Value Awards within the “Midsize SUVs with 3-Row Seating” category. Hmm…seems likely.
