With entries like the Kia EV6, Kia EV9, and even the Kia EV5, battery-electric vehicles will soon takeover. There are, however, popular models that will never die, and instead of replacing them, the automaker is electrifying them. One great example is the 2023 Sportage Plug-in Hybrid SUV. Only two trims – X-Line and X-Line Prestige, both trims of the 2023 Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor to form a full parallel hybrid system. Together, the horsepower generated is an output of 266 plus 419 lb-ft of torque. Tied to a six-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive standard, the EPA combined MPG is 35, and the EPA MPGe is 84.
Charging and Range
Using a 240-volt outlet, the 2023 Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid can charge up in about 2 hours. Because this is a PHEV, the battery powering the motor is larger than a standard hybrid, it can drive the vehicle for a considerable amount of time. The all-electric range (AER) is 34 miles. Plus, this plug-in hybrid SUV has a towing capacity of 2000 pounds with trailer brakes and 1653 pounds without.
Standard features on the 2023 Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid are heated exterior mirrors with LED turn signals integrated; a Smart Welcome system; high-utility roof rails; a panoramic sunroof with powered sunshade; sound-absorbing windshield glass; rear privacy and heated rear glass; a smart power tailgate, LED headlights, DRLs, and tail lights; and automatic headlamps. Only the Prestige trim comes with solar control glass, a heated windshield, LED projector headlamps, Led fog lights, and full LED tail lights. The standard wheel size is 19-inch alloy wheels with a gloss black finish.
Upon entry, consumers will find a display about 24-inches wide spanning across the center console. The X-Line comes with a 12.2-inch instrument cluster display to make up half of that 24-inches; the X-Line Prestige comes with a 12.3-inch instrument cluster display. Standard features also include dual-zone automatic climate control with an auto de-fog system, Led interior lighting (multi-color in the Prestige trim), X-Line Syntex upholstery, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with 2-way power lumbar support adjustment, heated front seats, a 60/40 split-folding & reclining rear seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and steering wheel-mounted controls. Only the X-Line Prestige comes with an 8-way power-adjustable front passenger seat (4-way and manual on the X-Line base trim), a driver seat memory system, ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.
The standard infotainment system is Kia Connect with Navigation, Apple CarPlay, Google Android Auto, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, Bluetooth wireless technology, a rear-view monitor, plus a wireless phone charger. A six-speaker audio system is standard for the X-Line, but the X-Line Prestige comes with a Harman Kardon premium surround sound system with HALOsonic technology and eight speakers.
