Kia EV6 GT Wins 2023 WCA World Performance Car Award

April 20th, 2023 by

In March 2023, we talked about the World Car Awards (WCA) and some good news for the Kia Corp. Well, there has been a lot of good news for Kia this year. It seems like every year, there is a new award being announced for the automaker, and April is already seeing the pattern continue. Two Kia models made the cut as finalists for the WCA, and now that the jurors have finished voting, we now know which of those two won. It was none other than the Kia EV6 GT, crowned as the 2023 World Performance Car by the WCA.

No offense to the other finalist, the Kia Niro. The crossover hybrid was a pretty big deal when it first came out, but that was also over five years ago. The auto industry is moving in full force towards battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and other electrified variations. Like many other automakers, Kia has a plan for the rest of the decade to add more BEVs to the lineup, such as the recent Kia EV9 and Kia EV5 concept. These wouldn’t be the first electrified vehicles to come from the automaker, but the Kia EV6 was the first all-electric model with no internal combustion engine (ICE) predecessor.

In fact, it was such a big deal, when the EV6 was initially released in 2021, Kia also released an EV6 First Edition for consumers who wanted the best the BEV had to offer. These premium features included an Augmented Reality (AR) Head-Up Display, Remote Smart Parking Assist, a wide sunroof, 20-inch wheels, a premium 14-speaker Meridian audio system with a two-year subscription to SiriusXM, and some unique color combinations for the exterior and interior cabin. Best of all, the First Edition was also based on the EV6 GT, the strongest of the lineup and the same trim that just won a WCA.

The EV6 GT comes with dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) and a 77.4 kWh battery that powers two motors – a 160kW front motor and a 270kW rear motor. With a combined power output of 430 kW (585 PS, 576 HP), able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds, and a top speed of 161 mph, the EV6 GT combined long-range capability, a spacious interior, and sophisticated design with the competitive power of traditional petrol-powered sports cars. In late 2022, Kia even launched a New Campaign for the EV6 GT, Silence is Powerful, to highlight its performance.

“To be recognized in this way by the World Car Awards’ judges is a tremendous honor. As Kia transforms to become a world-leading sustainable solutions provider, we are leaving no stone unturned to create vehicles which deliver exceptional practicality while also inspiring customers through their ingenuity, technology, and design. This latest prestigious accolade provides further confirmation of the success of our strategy.” – President and CEO of Kia Corporation Ho Sung Song

The judging panel of the WCA is made up of 100+ global jurors that represent the most diverse group of automotive journalists in the world. Brought together to recognize, reward, and inspire automotive excellence, leadership, and innovation in a rapidly changing automotive industry on a global scale, the collective audience of the WCA is 300 million consumers. Now everyone knows what the best BEV on the market is – the Kia EV6 GT.
