Late last year, Kia Corp debuted the all-new 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid , and earlier this year, revealed more details about the new X-Line model Sportage PHEV . The starting MSRP has recently become official, and new specs about the powertrain have been released. Starting at $38,490 (plus destination fee), the only trims priced are X-Line series, both with all-wheel drive as a standard, the Sportage PHEV X-Line and X-Line Prestige. Check out what else is new about the all-new 2023 Kia Sportage PHEV.

Powertrain and Recharging

A plug-in hybrid, the Sportage PHEV still comes with a gasoline engine and an electric motor with a sizable battery. Powering the 2023 Kia Sportage PHEV is a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, able to deliver 261 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The official specs are a 13.8-kWh battery powering a 66.9 kW electric motor making up the other side of the powertrain. Fuel economy is expected to be around 84 MPGequivalent, with an all-electric range (AER) of 34 miles.

Charging is still as easy as can be, with a built-in 7.2 kW high-efficiency on-board charger. Consumers can always plug it into a 120V electrical outlet, but with a Level-2 charger, the Sportage PHEV will only take about two hours to fully recharge the battery. Eventually, electric charging stations will become a more integrated part of highways and infrastructure, and stopping for a bite to eat while recharging a PHEV will eventually become commonplace, but for now, recharging while shopping nearby are the major choices when looking for some juice on-the-go.

Style

The front fascia returns with the Tiger Nose grille with “boomerang” design daytime running lights, muscular lines, and mainly reflects the style of the Sportage and Sportage Hybrid. “Notch-shaped” taillights are connected by a thin black graphic for the rear, but if looking for something that sets the PHEV apart, the X-Line adds unique front and rear bumpers with a satin chrome surround and 19-inch, gloss-black alloy wheels.

Inside the interior cabin really changes things. With a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 12.3-inch infotainment screen), the available dual panoramic curved display gives consumers a futuristic feel of the dashboard, practically all software, with Google Android Auto and Apple CarPlay standard. Cars are becoming more like computers and smartphones running its own operating system (OS) every year. The Sportage X-Line Prestige gets a little extra with an available 360-degree Surround-View Monitor with 3D view and a Harman/Kardon premium audio system. Kia Connect is also available, and can offer a 4G LTE-based internet Wi-Fi Hotspot and Smart Speaker Integration for Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.

Safety

More Advanced Driver Assistance-Systems (ADAS) have been made standard for the 2023 Kia Sportage PHEV. Lineup standards include a Driver Attention Warning (DAW) system, LED Headlights with High Beam Assist (HBA), Lane Following Assist (LFA), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Forward Collision Avoidance (FCA), Rear Occupant Alert (ROA), Rear View Monitor (RVM) with Dynamic Parking Guidance, Reverse Parking Distance Warning. Available systems can be found on select trims, adding Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM), Blind Spot Collision Avoidance-Assist (BCA), Blind Spot Collision Avoidance (BCA-PE), Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance-Assist (RCCA), Forward Collision Avoidance (FCA-JT), Forward Parking Distance Warning (PDW-F), Highway Driving Assist (HDA), Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA), Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control-Curve (NSCC-C), Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control-Zone (NSCC-Z), Reverse Parking Collision Avoidance (PCA-R), Safe Exit Warning (SEW), and Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop and Go.
