Jeep Forges its Green Path Forward

Jeep is on a journey to change its reputation from king of traditional SUVs to “green” electrified vehicles to lure modern buyers and pioneer electrified off-road vehicles amid a sea of competitors. Stellantis, Jeep’s new parent company formed after the merger of Fiat Chrysler and French automaker Groupe PSA, is counting on Jeep to be a large part of its electrification growth. Jeep currently offers three plug-in hybrid electric vehicles outside the U.S., while the all-new Jeep wrangler 4xe is slowly making its way to American dealer lots throughout the spring (2021). These first few models mark the beginning of the automaker’s plans when it comes to electrification, according to Jeep CEO Christian Meunier.

“Our vision is to be the greenest SUV brand in the world. We have a very strong plan to deliver that through a lot of exciting product in the pipeline,” said Meunier during an interview with CNBC.

According to Meunier, Jeep is poised to offer even more electrification in the coming years. Plans include all-electric vehicles as well as plug-in hybrids that’ll combine electrification with a traditional internal combustion engine. Jeep will sell these vehicles with specific 4xe badging, described as the perfect combination of the brand’s off-roading reputation and electrification efforts.

Jeep Wrangler Magneto

Jeep flexed its growing green muscle at the 2021 Easter Safari thanks to the all-electric Jeep Wrangler Magneto concept. The Jeep Wrangler Magneto paves the brand’s way forward given that it’s the first all-electric concept from Jeep. Automakers rely on concept vehicles to gauge customer interest and indicate the future direction of a brand, or sometimes, like in this case, just a vehicle. Jeep understands it’ll take some heavy lifting to change its reputation, but Meunier confidently states that it’s a task Jeep is up to achieving.

Why is Jeep going electric?

Like every other traditional automaker out there, Jeep is facing regulatory pressure to tighten its carbon emissions standards across the globe. Additionally, general consensus indicates that Jeep delayed its electric future and now faces pressure from intense competition such as General Motors and EV start-up Rivian. General Motors revived its Hummer nameplate as an all-electric affair, leading in the all-electric SUV race. “Electrification is a big opportunity for us. It will open some new dimensions because we’re full speed ahead,” Meunier said.
