Introducing the 2025 Gladiator 4xe PHEV
After discontinuing the diesel-powered Gladiator last year (2023), Jeep’s only pickup stood tall with a single powertrain option: the 3.6-liter V-6 engine, producing 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. However, Jeep will expand its electrified lineup next year (2025) by introducing a plug-in hybrid version of the Gladiator. According to Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa, who announced the news on LinkedIn, the Gladiator 4xe PHEV will join the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe, the best-selling plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in the United States, beginning in 2025.
While Filosa did not provide technical details about the new plug-in Gladiator, enthusiasts should anticipate the same powertrain as the Wrangler PHEV. This setup includes a 2.0-liter inline-four engine, a starter generator, and an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed gearbox. The combined power output for the Wrangler 4xe is 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, which significantly surpasses the V-6’s performance despite the smaller engine displacement.
The Wrangler 4xe’s high-voltage lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 17 kilowatt-hours, providing an EPA-estimated all-electric range of 22 miles. Although these specifications have yet to be confirmed for the Gladiator, they offer a valuable benchmark for prospective buyers. Integrating the electric motor into the gearbox means the plug-in hybrid Gladiator will retain the same off-road capabilities as its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts. The solid front and rear axles will remain unchanged, preserving the Gladiator’s renowned off-road prowess.
The new plug-in hybrid Gladiator will come to life at the same Toledo, Ohio plant as the Wrangler and the ICE Gladiator. This addition is part of a broader electrification strategy by Stellantis, which includes range-extended electric versions of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer set to debut in 2025, followed by fully electric versions in 2027. According to the agreement between Stellantis and the United Auto Workers union, an all-electric Grand Cherokee is also slated for release in 2027, with the Wrangler receiving full electric and range-extended versions a year later.
In summary, Jeep’s move to introduce the Gladiator 4xe PHEV marks a significant step in expanding its electrified vehicle lineup. The new plug-in hybrid model is poised to offer enhanced performance and maintain the Gladiator’s off-road capabilities while providing a more environmentally friendly alternative to the traditional V-6 engine. As Jeep continues to innovate and adapt to the growing demand for electrified vehicles, the Gladiator 4xe PHEV will join the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee PHEVs as a critical player in the brand’s future.
