Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ (FCA) Toledo Assembly Complex welcomed a new member to its assembly line — the innovative 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe, the first plug-in hybrid of its kind. For the first time ever in the history of the iconic Wrangler model buyers will be able to buy the most technologically advanced Wrangler with its zero-emission open air-driving capability, all while dominating the road both on and off the beaten path. Assembly of the 2021 Wrangler 4xe, including its 275-horsepower gasoline engine, 17 kilowatt-hour battery pack, and two electric motors was just integrated into the existing Wrangler assembly line with the addition of two new shifts. More than 3,000 UAW-represented employees at the Toledo North plant in Ohio are responsible for assembly. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is destined to land in dealer showrooms in early 2021.
Jeep Wrangler 4xe Debut
Jeep first gave the general public a peek at its latest Wrangler at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show. Attendees had the chance to explore three of Jeep’s upcoming plug-in hybrid models: the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, the Jeep Renegade 4xe, and the Jeep Compass 4xe. All three models are scheduled to launch sometime in 2021 but aren’t quite ready to be driven just yet, so Jeep offered attendees a virtual reality (VR) based test drive instead.
An Iconic Brand Goes Green
“Green” is definitely not a word anyone would associate with the Jeep brand. As Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ (FCA) off-road-oriented SUV brand, Jeep is known more for its off-road prowess and run-of-the-mill engines, but the automaker has a plan to adapt and pivot its reputation. Now that Jeep’s been making an effort to expand its lineup to include plug-in hybrid vehicles, it’s safe to say that the brand is embracing a more eco-conscious future. Jeep’s Global President, Christian Meunier, vowed to expand the reach of the brand’s 4xe hybrid powertrain, grow the brand globally, and reform the automaker’s image as the world’s “greenest SUV brand.” Jeep is currently in the middle of implementing a broad, five-year electrification plan across its lineup that’ll have hybrid and all-electric options by 2022.
2021 Green SUV of the Year
Renowned automotive industry publication Green Car Journal named the all-new 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid model the Green SUV of the Year. The announcement was made at the 2020 Virtual Greenbuild Conference and Expo.
“The Wrangler 4xe delivers an exciting and environmentally positive way for Jeep fans to enjoy their on- and off-road experiences. Its powerful plug-in hybrid power plant brings welcome performance while enabling up to 25 miles of trail or street driving exclusively on quiet zero-emission battery power,” said Ron Cogan, editor, and publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCarJournal.com.
