There’s two things that most people when they think of luxury vehicles, tons of amenities and extreme performance. Two SUVs that have both of those features in spades are the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk and the BMW X5 M. Both SUVs have extreme horsepower and excellent features, but when it comes down to a comparison of performance, speed, towing capacity and features, many people are surprised by the results.

Performance ~~~~

If you asked people which vehicle is faster, the more expensive luxury BMW SUV or the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, you’d probably hear a lot of people say the BMW X5, but that’s not the case. The Grand Cherokee Trackhawk not only outperforms the BMW X5 in power and speed, but it outperforms all SUVs — the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is the most powerful and quickest SUV on the market.

Under the hood of the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 engine, which is very similar to the engine that is in the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. The engine produces 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque and all of that power gives the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk the ability to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds and complete a quarter-mile in just 11.6 seconds. Also, the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk can hit a top speed of 180 mph.

The BMW X5 M is equipped with a 4.4-liter M TwinPower Turbo V8 engine. The engine produces 567 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, which is powerful, but nowhere near as much power as the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. The 2018 BMW X5 M goes from 0-60 mph in 4 seconds, completes a quarter-mile in 12.2 seconds and has a top-speed of 160 mph.

Both vehicles are equipped with all-wheel-drive, however, the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk has more towing power than the BMW X5 M. The Grand Cherokee has a maximum towing capacity of 7,200 pounds, and the BMW X5 has a maximum towing capacity of 5,952 pounds.

Interior

Both SUVs have high-end features that make the cabin comfortable, stylish and modern, but even though the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk isn’t made by a luxury manufacturer, it offers more luxurious features. Both vehicles feature leather seats and provide 36 cubic-feet of space for cargo, and heated front seats, but the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is also equipped with ventilated front seats and heated second-row seats, which is not offered on the BMW X5 M. The BMW X5 does have a larger touchscreen than the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk (10.4 inches versus 8.4 inches), and it comes standard with a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, and the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is available with a 19-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

The price differences between the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk and the BMW X5 are also pretty extreme. Although the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is faster, tows more, is more powerful and has high-end luxury features, it is more affordable than the BMW X5 M. The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk has a starting MSRP of $86,000 (plus destination fee), and the 2018 BMW X5 M has a starting MSRP of $101,700 (plus destination fee).
