The IIHS Awards The Chrysler Pacifica With TOP SAFETY PICK

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is giving the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica high remarks this year, as the minivan received a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the nonprofit organization.

This recent evaluation updates the Pacifica’s status from its performance during the 2021 model year, as vehicles that were produced after last September were also included in these rankings.

“The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica delivers on our firm commitment to provide customers with superior safety,” said Chrysler Brand CEO Chris Feuell. “Pacifica remains the ideal choice for anyone seeking the greatest combination of safety, innovative technology and value.”

It was in 2020, that the IIHS adjusted its ratings system in order to incorporate other car factors, such as lights and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) technology. This standard, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) AEB equipment on the latest Chrysler Pacifica rated “superior” according to IIHS standards, the highest possible grade that a vehicle can get.

It makes use of a mash-up of camera technologies and radar sensors that was augmented to ensure a wider field of view. Fusing the two methods of object detection (otherwise known as sensor-fusion) also allows for redundancy, which in turn betters the system’s performance.

The AEB system, which is making its way across the product lineup of Stellantis as standard gear, senses when there may be an impending collision. If this is the case or there is a detection, visual and audible alerts will be activated. Should the driver fail to respond in a timely manner, the system may trigger the car’s brakes to help prevent a crash or reduce its severity.

The Pedestrian AEB capability of the Pacifica received an “advanced” rating. Additionally, it received a “good” grade (the highest possible) among the six main crashworthiness tests administered by IIHS:

  • Small overlap front (driver side)
  • Small overlap front (passenger side)
  • Moderate overlap, front
  • Side impact
  • Roof strength
  • Head restraints and seats

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica is the only North American vehicle in the minivan segment that has second-row Stow ‘n Go seating. This feature gives owners the convenience of folding the seats inside of the floor. The vehicle also has an available all-wheel-drive (AWD) system.

The AWD technology in this Chrysler model easily engages at various speeds, with the need for activation by the driver. Should the Pacifica’s wheels lose traction, the system will automatically transfer available engine torque to the wheels with more grip, for increased control.

The Chrysler company has received over 160 industry honors and accolades for the Chrysler Pacifica, making it the car industry’s most award minivan for six consecutive years.
