Electric Chevrolet Silverado

General Motors (GM) recently announced that the Chevrolet division will bring forth its first-ever electric Silverado. This pickup truck will be constructed at the automaker’s Factory Zero assembly plant in Detroit and Hamtramck, Michigan. Mark Reuss, GM’s president, even confirmed that the GMC Hummer electric SUV (which was revealed this month) will also be built at the same location as the Silverado. Previously, the car company said that the Hummer pickup, as well as the Cruise Origin, would also be made at the Factory Zero store. It is expected that the Hummer pickup will be introduced to the market sometime this year.

GM’s goal is to provide dealerships with over a million electric vehicles worldwide by 2025 and then win over the EV “market leadership in North America,” including that “with the company’s Ultium Platform, virtual development tools and technology, GM has reduced vehicle development times by nearly 50 percent to just 26 months.”

The automaker says that the electrified Silverado has been developed, though in and out, to be an electric vehicle. The company is also estimating that this truck will provide over 400 miles worth of range and all from a full charge, it will also be available for both retail and fleet buyers.

Reuss stated Chevrolet takes “everything Chevy’s loyal truck buyers love about Silverado—and more—and puts it into an electric pickup that will delight retail and commercial customers alike.”

In January of last year, the automaker said that it was investing $2.2 billion in its Detroit-Hamtramck plant for the purpose of making several electric trucks and SUVs. GM retitled its plant to Factory Zero some months ago in order to convey its vision of a future without crashes, emissions, and congestion.

In fact, GM says Factory Zero is the “launchpad for GM’s multi-brand EV strategy. The facility has advanced technology and tooling and was designed with a focus on sustainable manufacturing.”

Additionally, Factory Zero will be getting significant renovations and upgrades, such as with “new machines, conveyors, controls, and tooling,” for the paint and body shops/general assembly areas.

Since last year, GM has made several announcements regarding its plans for an eco-friendly future, which also involves a modular propulsion system and an adaptive EV platform energized by proprietary Ultium batteries. The automaker has also said that it committed over $27 billion to electrics and autonomous vehicle development, encompassing $7 billion in 2021. The company intends to release 30 EVs worldwide towards the end of 2025, with over two-thirds available in the States. GM says that between Cadillac, GMC, Chevrolet , and Buick, GM will have EVs that range at all price points. Recently, the company announced its 2022 Bolt EUV and Bolt EV, which are expected to arrive in dealerships this summer.

Last January, GM revealed BrightDrop, their new business that seeks to charge up and advance the delivery of goods and services through its systematic offering of electrical first-to-last-mile products, software, and services. The purpose is to help “empower delivery and logistics companies to move goods more efficiently.”

What’s more, this technology will reach over to fuel cells, as it will equip its Hydrotec fuel-cell power cubes to Navistar to utilize in its production model fuel-cell EV, a.k.a the International RHTM Series.

The automaker says that it will spend $2 billion on its Spring Hill, Tennessee, assembly plant to undertake the shift to GM’s third EV plant, alongside Factory Zero and Orion Assembly in Orion Township, Mich.

GM announced the construction of Ultium Cells LLC back in 2019. Cells LLC is a joint venture with LG Energy Solution to mass-produce battery cells in Lordstown, Ohio. According to the company, the facility’s $2.3 billion construction is currently in motion.
