Chevrolet Picks Up The Pace In The Electrified Race – Miami Lakes Automall Chevrolet
Automakers near and far are slowly making preparations to redevelop their platforms from gasoline-powered vehicles to those that are either fully electric or hybrids. This is especially so for pickup trucks, with this segment on course to becoming the most popular space for EV models. Some examples include Ford’s F-150 Lighting, Rivian R1T, Tesla’s Cybertruck, and more.
Another automaker throwing its hat into the electric pickup race is General Motors (GM), as they’ve already confirmed the resurgence of its Hummer moniker under the GMC brand, but as a fully electric truck. The main focus on the construction of this vehicle will be its 1,000 horsepower output and “luxury off-roading”, but for buyers who are looking for something a bit simpler and rugged, they can opt for the newly-teased Chevrolet Silverado.
Last week Wednesday, (Oct.6), Chevrolet said that it would introduce the electric version of the Silverado truck at the Consumer Electronics Show in 2022. The event, which is held annually in Las Vegas, Nevada, is one of the world’s prominent industry trade shows. Mary Barra, GM’s CEO is set to make the full reveal of the pickup in January, but in the meantime, here’s what you should know.
First and foremost, the Silverado will be powered by the brand’s new Ultium battery system. These packs will support the company’s next-generation electric models all across its brands, providing energy storage that range from 50 kilowatt-hours to 200 kWh. GM has said before that these batteries will provide “up to 400 miles or more on a full charge”, which mirrors the figure that the Silverado was given. This gives us reason to believe that the pickup’s battery will be the same size as the electrified Hummer.
The Silverado will be produced at GM’s Factory Zero plant by the side of the Hummer EV and the untitled GMC electric pickup.
Another point of interest is the truck’s glass roof. This optional transparent type of ceilings feeds off the recent trend of fixed glass roofs geared on vehicles such as the Tesla Model 3 and Ford Mustang Mach-E. The Hummer EV also sports a congruous “Infinity Roof”, at the same time, the Silverado’s roof will be mounted rather than removable like the Hummer’s top-frame.
In August, GM announced that the Silverado EV will involve a set of kicks going up as far as 24-inches, which is the largest pair of wheels that has ever been offered on a pickup from Factory Zero. This vehicle will also encompass available four-wheel steering, which in the same way as the electric Hummer’s system, can aid in maneuvering its way in tight spaces by lessening the turning radius and possibly even positioning the truck diagonally.
Mark Reuss, president of General Motors, made his expectations clear during a recent press call that its target customers for the battery-powered version of the Silverado will contrast from conventional pickup buyers. This would make sense as to why the company chose the CES to showcase the truck as opposed to a standalone event, but it may also indicate that what GM anticipates the truck market to evolve into as it transitions even more towards a luxury segment while keeping a considerable amount of utility. The carmaker also revealed the availability of a fleet version, which essentially is the draft horse within the lineup and usually has the groundwork as the retail model, just more centered on functionality and not so much about interior opulence.
GM still has more in store with its Silverado, some that we’ll have to wait a little longer for. However, with recent revelations relating to the company’s semi-autonomous driving functions, the pickup may be likely to become a knockout with future pickup buyers. Be on the lookout in January for the unveiling of the truck at the CES, and in the meantime…
