Just as the half-ton Ram 1500 received a prominent upgrade for 2025, nostalgia crept in to remind Ram loyalists of the esteemed TRX pickup truck. The truck launched in 2020, delivering an immediate and exhilarating driving experience. Upon pressing the red start button, its supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V-8 engine roars to life, producing a distinctive and powerful sound that’s among the best in the automotive industry.Â
Although the TRX seamlessly absorbs shocks, the sense of shock is transferred to the owner upon realizing that the powertrain churns out 702 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. However, according to one enthusiast, a 702 horsepower-rated engine is insufficient.
How to Customize a Ram 1500 TRX
Westen Champlin added a pair of turbochargers to his 2022 Ram 1500 TRX Ignition Edition. Champlin is on a journey to extract even greater output from the pickup. The process of transcending automotive limits began in New Mexico. Champlin, renowned for his assertive modifications, collaborated with Hellion Turbo in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to equip his Ram TRX with twin turbos while preserving the original supercharger.Â
This audacious method significantly increased the truck’s power output to a staggering 900 horsepower. Nonetheless, after engaging in brazen driving maneuvers, engine issues arose. Indeed, the extent of the damage to the Hellcat mill is unknown, but a borescope inspection revealed concerning signs, like the deactivation of several cylinders. A compression test confirmed these fears, indicating a complete loss of compression.
How Much Horsepower Does a Ram TRX Achieve?
Unfazed by these challenges, Champlin determined to further refine his build. Given the demands of combining two forced induction systems on a V-8 engine, especially for sustained performance, installing a brand-new engine was a more promising approach. Replacing the damaged components with a new Hemi Demon V-8 long-block sourced from the Direct Connection catalog established a foundation for enhanced performance and a renewed opportunity for his modified TRX.
Following the installation of the Demon long-block mill, the team conducted a power measurement of the TRX pickup truck. The results were outstanding, revealing a substantial increase in power output.Â
- The truck generated 926 horsepower and 887 pound-feet of torque at the rear tires.Â
Champlin then turned his attention to the front driveshaft, a vital element removed during the turbo installation process. The reinstallation of the front driveshaft was necessary to reinstate the TRX’s complete all-wheel-drive capability.Â
- When accounting for a 15 percent driveline loss, the estimated power and torque of the engine were an astonishing 1,090 horsepower and 1,044 pound-feet of torque.
This enabled the TRX to handle TRX-specific tasks. Unexpectedly, these tasks don’t involve pragmatic feats like rescuing vehicles or navigating challenging terrain. As Champlin explained, the Ram TRX’s primary function is to perform a thrilling 360-degree burnout while attached to a skid-steer loader.
