The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Won the Green Car Journal Family Green Car of the Year Award Again
Going green is the new fad of the automotive industry. Every major automaker has plans to introduce more electrified models to their lineup, including battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). Amongst them is Mitsubishi Motors, but the automaker seems to be a little slow to act. As far as we can tell, Mitsubishi is going to milk the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid for all its worth, and when it keeps winning awards, there is no reason for it to shine the spotlight elsewhere. In fact, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV just won the Green Car Journal Family Green Car of the Year Award for its third consecutive year.
“The Outlander Plug-in Hybrid is an ideal choice for families desiring a versatile vehicle that speaks to electrification and decreased carbon emissions, without requiring sacrifices in capabilities or driving range…This plug-in hybrid’s 38-mile battery electric range meets the driving needs of a great many families who wish to drive zero-emission every day, with longer journeys accommodated by its overall 420-mile range as a hybrid.” – Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCarJournal.com
A trusted name in the industry for electrified vehicles, Green Car Journal‘s Family Green Car of the Year Award has been designed to give a little more attention to models that are less detrimental to the environment while offering consumers a great vehicle. Specifically, the award recognizes vehicles that not only perform well from an environmental standpoint, but also offer style and versatility. A winner overseas for about a decade, the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid came stateside in 2017, and was quite the popular model for several years.
A PHEV, or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, seems to be the go-to model for many consumers who aren’t quite ready to jump the boat and go all-electric. With the lack of BEV charging stations in major cities and along the highway, consumers won’t make the change to BEVs until they can be certain that they won’t end up stranded without a charging point for miles. That’s one of the major reasons many consumers buy PHEVs. They’re the perfect middle ground for going a little green, but also being able to fuel up at every other intersection or highway exit. Recharging the battery is more of an afterthought, and can be done so when it’s convenient, not mandatory.
As for the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid, when it comes to a PHEV, consumers can drive purely on the power of the electric motor before switching over to the gas. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV can offer an all-electric range (AER) of 38 miles. Combined with a full tank of gas, and the total hybrid driving range goes up to 420 miles. When it comes to versatility, Mitsubishi Motors offers its Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system on most new models today. An all-wheel drive system designed for handling various types of road conditions and terrain, the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid also offers some off-road action and capability. That, plus the great fuel economy it offers, the Outlander PHEV is still making waves in its old age.
