Nissan and Mitsubishi Plan New BEVs and a New Pickup Truck for North America Release
The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance (Alliance), has been pretty beneficial for the three automakers. First saving Nissan from bankruptcy, followed by swooping in to save Mitsubishi Motors, Renault has been the shining beacon of hope for these two brands. The new Mitsubishi Colt, which only seems to be sold overseas at the moment, is really just a rebadged Renault Clio – as is the hybrid. Now, after the Alliance signed a deal to create the Ampere battery-electric vehicle (BEV) facility, word is Nissan and Mitsubishi might get some new BEVs to add to the lineup in the next few years. It would seem that the two are also making the most of their Alliance benefits by working on a new pickup truck, and this time, possibly for the U.S.
New Pickup Truck
It’s been quite the wait, hasn’t it? Overseas, Mitsubishi is known for more than SUVs and the legendary Outlander PHEV. One very well-known model that has yet to make it to the States is the Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck. A midsize truck, bringing the Triton to the U.S. could be a huge win for the Japanese automaker. Aside from a pickup truck from a certain 4×4 off-road automaker, the market hasn’t seen a midsize pickup truck since the Dodge Ram Dakota was sent out to pasture. It’s the perfect segment to flourish and gain new consumers, and yet, Mitsubishi isn’t budging.
We’re hoping that the news about Nissan and Mitsubishi collaborating on future models planned for release in North America isn’t just fake news. Part of the same Alliance, the two dig their hands in the pockets of Renault every now and then to make use of shared resources, technology, and platforms. Recently, Nissan announced its three-year plan to launch an assortment of new models, five in total that will make up the majority of its U.S. lineup by 2026. Not too long ago, Mitsubishi Motors shared its “Challenge 2025” medium-term business strategy with an assortment of new and refreshed vehicles. A new pickup truck was amongst them, but we’re pretty sure it was the Triton. Also under wraps was a new BEV pickup truck, and this is where the new collaboration with Nissan holds water.
New BEVs
We’re also looking forward to the new BEV Nissan and Mitsubishi will be bringing to the U.S. Sure, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV may be a winner overseas, but it’s gotten a little tiresome over here. The sales say otherwise – in 2024, a total of 6,681 unit sales represented an increase of 240.7 percent over the previous year for the Outlander plug-in hybrid SUV, but the automaker has also been playing with the idea of a replacement for several years. At one point, there was talk of a new Eclipse Cross plug-in hybrid, but was scrapped shortly after.
With all major automakers and automotive groups going electric, Mitsubishi Motors might face another problem in North America if all it has to offer is a plug-in hybrid over ten years old. There is some serious speculation that amongst the upcoming Nissan lineup is the new Ariya crossover, and this could be a contender for the new Mitsubishi BEV. Remember, back when the Alliance first formed, the Eclipse Cross was said to be the last model made completely in-house. Going forward, Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi Motors will share everything. That means we’ll be seeing a lot of rebadged models for Mitsubishi Motors, but hopefully Ampere will also bring something new to the table very soon.
