New Human-Interface Tech from Mitsubishi Electric Talks like People
The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance shared its mid-term plans for Alliance 2022, and it may sound like Renault and Nissan are the most busy of the three automakers, with a lot of hybrid technology and self-driving technology being the highlight of their contribution. However, Mitsubishi isn’t just on the verge of revealing a new vehicle for the subcompact or large car segment. Within the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) is sister company Mitsubishi Electric, and within this company is a team known as “Mitsubishi Electric’s AI creates the State-of-the- ART in technology” team, or Maisart for short. Last we heard about Maisart , the team had designed a smarter form of virtual assistants to create a seamless experience between human-machine interfaces via intuitive and more human-like understanding of words and commands. Now, Maisart has put this technology to work in vehicles, and is testing a new form of GPS that can give more organic commands.
Called “Scene-Aware Interaction”, this technology uses the AI technology previously designed to analyze multimodal sensing information for more natural and intuitive interaction with humans. It also makes use of LiDAR systems, the very same systems used on self-driving vehicles to obtain information about the surrounding world and then create a map to navigate. By obtaining a variety of information – images and video captured with cameras, audio information recorded with microphones, and localization information measured with LiDAR – a Scene-Aware Interaction system also comes with Attentional Multimodal Fusion technology, another piece of tech designed by Mitsubishi Electric, that allows it to organize information into categories based on their priority as well as the appropriate words that may fit a current word bank in the system.
It all sounds very complicated, so here’s the easiest way to put it. When driving down the road and using a GPS system, whether it’s the one in your car or the one in your smartphone, a voice pops up and says, “Turn right on [insert name] in one mile”. So now, you’re stuck looking for a street sign a mile ahead, a range of distance most people can’t just count while on the road. Wouldn’t it be nicer if you had some sort of landmark to go by? How about, “Take a right at the post office?” Now that’s something hard to miss and something most drivers could understand, and that’s the kind of communication Maisart is working on.
Scene-Aware Interaction technology is, in some sense, a new step forward for artificial intelligence by Mitsubishi Electric, able to communicate with people in a more intuitive and organic fashion. Although there’s no word on when we’ll see something like this in cars, with testing having only just started, but MMC has plans for the technology already. Maybe not in the U.S. just yet, but in other parts of the world, the company hopes to see Scene-Aware Interaction technology able to interact with robots in automated buildings and factories, health and wellness systems, and even act as surveillance systems, able to register what should and shouldn’t be in a certain area. It’s better than a random motion-detected lamp.
