Trick-or-treat! It’s Spooktober, and the ghouls and witches in us all are starting to come out, ready to party. After the pandemic, some people are still wary about taking their kids trick-or-treating, or just going up to stranger’s doors for candy. We’ve been taught all our lives that’s exactly what not to do. This year, why not try something different? Let’s throw a party with all the families of their neighborhood at a Trunk-or-Treat party!

That’s right. Throwing a Halloween party doesn’t die when you have a kid. It just means finding more creative ways to be able to enjoy the spirit of the night while still giving your kids a unique and safe Halloween experience. If you haven’t heard of “Trunk-or-Treat” before, the concept is pretty simple. You organize an event with volunteers or other families in the neighborhood to put together a party where kids go from car-to-car instead of door-to-door for Halloween this year.

Step one – find a location. If living in the suburbs, finding a cul de sac or public park should be an easy space to find. This is where you host the night’s events. Step two – the concept about going car-to-car means filling the trunk or hatchback or truck bed of a vehicle with candy. We can put them in a line, or a circle, or get creative and scatter them throughout a haunted (but not that scary) path.

Step three is all about the art. If we’re going to do this right, let’s not be lazy and just throw on some fake cobwebs on the car and call it a day. Pick a theme and use it to decorate, inside and out to set the spooky mood before finding the sugary treasure hidden inside. The trunk is the usual spot, but if amongst friends, entering a spooky empty SUV full of candy may not be frowned upon.

That’s really all there is to it. Well, if we’re throwing a simple Trunk-or-Treat Party, but who wants that? Aside from collecting candy, why not also organize some family-friendly events or games? We need to help the little ones burn off that sugar high before we get them home. Potato sack races, scavenger hunts, maybe laser gun fights depending on the age of the child. We need to throw some kind of activity in to really host a fun Trunk-or-Treat Party.

Last of all, get something for the parents or guardians helping to host this shin-dig. Maybe a goodie bag will do the trick for most events, but a spiked bowl of punch can also help. Just, don’t mix it up with the punch bowl for the kids. Oh, and don’t forget to dress up like you would for any other costume party. It is Halloween, after all. Let out the good witch for a night.

Planning to throw your own Trunk-or-Treat Party? We’d love to see how it turns out. Share pictures and tag us on our Miami Lakes Automall social media page. Have a happy and safe Halloween for 2024!
