The Kia Corp is determined to become the next all-electric automaker with the many battery-electric vehicles being added to its lineup. We got the Kia EV6 in 2022, the Kia EV9 in 2023, the Kia EV5 concept, and the recent unveiling of the Kia EV4 and Kia EV3. Out of all of these, there is one concept that has caught our eye – the Kia EV8. This is the concept that could bring back the Kia Stinger as an all-electric model, and it seems like Kia is already throwing that idea around.

“That kind of model is under study…What kind of model can help build the brand? This is what we are now studying.” – Kia President Ho-sung Song

It’s not very clear or even determined, but when asked about the Kia Stinger, this is what Song had to say. We got a tease of the idea back in February 2024 that yet announced concepts were still on the board for Kia engineers, such as an EV7 and an EV8. There have also been glimpses of a new BEV set to break the record for the power output of Kia BEVs currently in the market. How would this be possible, and how would Kia rebuild the Kia Stinger?

First thing’s first, what platform will it be built on? The Kia Corp is in talks of building a new BEV platform, and platform-beyond vehicles (PBVs) are the current craze, so that leaves the most logical choice at the moment as the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) currently acting as the underpinning for most Kia and Hyundai BEVs. There isn’t a whole lot about the possible powertrain, with speculation that it could follow the brilliant and high-powered Ioniq 5 N by Hyundai. The parent group of Kia, everything Hyundai gets eventually finds a place in the Kia lineup, and the Ioniq 5 N is capable of producing 601 horsepower. We prefer the initial rumor of a new, massive 113.2 kWh battery pack dual motor powertrain capable of generating a total of 450 kW (603 horsepower).

The latter definitely sounds like the kind of power an electric sports car should be able to produce. A certain muscle car automaker is offering a vehicle with a total output of 670 horsepower, so Kia may want to step it up a bit to compete with that. Especially now that the cost of building BEVs is slowly decreasing, making it easier for automakers to get their hands on more lithium and cobalt for more power. Moreover, the major thing the BEV market is suffering from is they’re all SUVs – yuck. We need a smaller, faster BEV finally, and that’s exactly what an electric Stinger could bring to the market.

Consumers who miss the Stinger would be lucky to still find one on a dealership lot. They sold as fast as they ended, sent off with the Kia Stinger Tribute Edition. A model highlighting all the good things about the Kia sports car, it was the first Kia vehicle in a long time to set the benchmark for the style and performance of new, sporty models like the Kia K5. Only 440 units were produced (for the U.S.), and that was it. Here’s hoping it was just to make room for a new, electric incarnation of nameplate.
