Kia Has All-Time Best BEV Sales for May 2024
As Kia continues to release more battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), the future of the automaker becomes clear when we take a look at its sales. At the moment, the Kia North America lineup only has two solid BEVs – the EV6 and the EV9. That is about to change with the growing lineup of BEV concepts revealed by Kia in 2023 and 2024. While we keep an eye on other concepts to pop up, the automaker is showing strong sales, especially in May 2024, partially in thanks to the Kia EV9. It would seem that the Kia Plan S Strategy announced in January 2020 is well underway to make the Kia Corp a large seller for all BEVs in the world.
It’s not just the Kia EV9 that made a major sales play for the month of May for Kia. The automaker sold 2187 EV9 SUV units this year compared to May 2023. It’s technically only fair, since the Kia EV9 didn’t make its official splash until the 2023 Monteery Car Week in August. Still, a win is a win, and the Kia EV9 drove sales for Kia North America, marking its best-ever monthly sales and the second consecutive month of sales growth. The other flagship of the lineup driving sales was the 2024 Kia Sportage SUV.

Kia’s best-selling model year-to-date in 2024, the Sportage set a new monthly sales record with 15,512 units in May 2024. It was a 1.20 percent increase from 12,862 units to 15,512 units sold, but the Kia Sportage continues to bloom with the Sportage hybrid and Sportage plug-in hybrid models. Also sharing some of the limelight for SUVs are the massive Kia Telluride, Kia Carnival, and Kia Niro. Together, they helped Kia achieve its best-ever utility monthly sales and set a new sales record for May. Altogether, Kia’s utility models accounted for 80 percent of all sales for the month of May.
Circling back to BEVs, the Kia EV9 shares some of the spotlight with the EV6. Out a whole year before the EV9, the EV6 also experienced a small increase of 1.19 percent, going from 2237 units sold in May 2023 to 2660 units sold in May 2024. Together, Kia’s overall BEV sales skyrocketed to a 127 percent year-on-year increase to 7,197 units. That makes May 2024 the highest BEV sales month ever for the automaker. All this, and to think Kia just premiered its new Kia EV3 on a global scale. The Kia EV9 quickly replaced the EV6 as the flagship BEV for the lineup, and took top honors at the 2024 Northwest Automotive Press Association (NWAPA) Mudfest event – the “Outdoor Utility Vehicle” and “Three-Row Family SUV” awards. Perhaps the Kia EV3 will do the same once the BEV SUV is released.
